#5 Texas Tech Red Raiders at New Mexico Lobos
Game time
April 17 (Tue): 2:00 PM
Probable starters
(TBA) Ryan Sublette (0-1, 7.36 ERA) vs James Harrington (0-1, 11.37 ERA)
The matchup
The Red Raiders take a trip west to Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Lobos for a single game set. Texas Tech comes in 29-8 (8-4) and ranked in the top five after a three game sweep of the Kansas State Wildcats last weekend. New Mexico comes in 12-21-1 (6-12) on a nine game losing streak after being swept 3-0 by Nevada.
New Mexico has struggled particularly on offense. The Lobos recorded only 13 runs during the series against the Wolfpack. To add insult to injury, the Lobos will be without senior captain Danny Collier, who went down with an injury on Friday. Prior to the injury, Collier put up 23 runs on 38 hits with 14 RBIs and a home run.
The last time these two teams faced off was back on March 7th in Lubbock. The Red Raiders won that match up 7-2 after a near shutout performance by Ryan Shetter.
Players to watch
Junior INF Hayden Schilling leads the Lobos with a .346 batting average. In 107 at-bats, Schilling put up 17 runs on 37 hits with 18 RBIs and a homerun. Last time against Tech he picked up two hits but no runs as well as pitched for one full inning as a reliever.
Prediction
New Mexico has been on the upswing as a program ever since Ray Birmingham took over in 2009 however, this is definitely what you would call an off year. The Lobos are in the middle of a nine-game losing streak and with the injuries they have suffered recently, it doesn’t look like it will get any easier for New Mexico. While they would love to upset their bitter rival, they won’t. Look for Texas Tech to add another win before the Red Raiders take on the Oklahoma Sooners this weekend.
8-3 Texas Tech
