Matchup
The Red Raiders return home this weekend for a four game series with the #15 ranked South Alabama Jaguars. The Jaguars come to town ranked #15 in the D1 Baseball poll and will pose the first real challenge for the Red Raiders, who are currently undefeated.
This is the sixth season for head coach Mark Calvi. Calvi has led the Jaguars to three Sun Belt championships in the last four years.
Last season the Jaguars went 40-21 and finished second in the Sun Belt East Division. They were eliminated in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional by Mississippi State.
South Alabama comes in with a 2-0 record against Big 12 opponents as the Jaguars opened the season with a 12-5 win over the Kansas State Wildcats and a 6-5 win over the #18 Oklahoma Sooners during the Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach tournament.
Players to watch
OF Hardy Dylan was instrumental in leading the Jaguars to a comeback win over Kansas State. In 10 starts, the junior batted .364 average. Dylan recorded six RBIs and 12 runs in 44 at bats.
OF Michael Sandle leads the team with a .406 batting average. In 32 at bats the redshirt freshman recorded nine runs and 12 RBIs after starting all 10 games for the Jaguars.
Prediction
This is by far the best team the Red Raiders have faced so far this season. The Jaguars should come in confident after starting the season with back to back wins against the Big 12. South Alabama has a high powered offense that could rival even Texas Tech’s. The Red Raiders have a lot more depth at pitcher than the Jaguars which will give Tech an advantage when it comes time to turn to the bullpens. I’d love for Tech to keep the streak alive and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Red Raiders to be 13-0 on Monday. South Alabama is too good to be swept by any team. I expect the Red Raiders to win the series 3-1
Friday: 10-4 Texas Tech
Saturday 1: 8-5 Texas Tech
Saturday 2: 13-8 Texas Tech
Sunday: 9-5 South Alabama
