Texas Tech Red Raiders at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Game time

Tuesday, 12:00 PM

Probable Starters

RHP Jose Quezada (2-0, 0.00 ERA) vs RHP Trevelle Hill ( 1-0, 0.00 ERA)

The matchup

The Red Raiders finish their South Texas road trip with a midweek matchup against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros. The Red Raiders come off a series sweep of the UTSA Roadrunners.

UTRGV comes into the matchup with a 5-3 record after going 1-2 against the University of Illinois-Chicago.

This is the first season for head coach Derek Matlock. Matlock spent the last five seasons at West Virginia as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. In five seasons with West Virginia, the Mountaineers went 160-127. Matlock was also responsible for coaching six pitchers drafted in the MLB Draft, three in the top 15 rounds.

Players to watch

Austin Siener has a .412 average in 17 at bats. He’s recorded six runs, one homer and two RBIs.

Elijah Alexander also has an average of .407 in 27 at bats. He’s scored seven runs on 11 hits this season, as well as one homer and 4 RBIs.

Prediction

This might be the best team that Tech has faced so far, as the Vaqueros received votes in the Baseball America top 25 poll. Matlock is one heck of a pitching coach so I’d expect a little less offense in this matchup. That said, Tech is still the #3 ranked team in the country and has an absolutely electric offense. Look for the Red Raiders to win this one 8-3.
