Big 12 Baseball Power Rankings

Rankings for the Week of 04/10/17

Nikopoia

It’s a crazy Big 12 World out there and Tech is in the middle of it after blowing a 5 run lead in the 9th to Baylor. How does it all shake out this week?

1. TCU Horned Frogs (26-5, 8-1) Last Week: 2

TCU swept Murray St as predicted. They are sitting 2 games in front of Tech and West Virginia. Which they just so happen to still have on their upcoming schedule. In other words, the Big 12 title could be wrapped up by the last weekend in April. TCU has the Mountaineers in Morgantown this weekend though. Strange things happen there. Definitely the series to watch this weekend. (Prediction: TCU wins series over WVU 2-1) (Last Week Prediction: TCU sweeps Murray St)

2. Texas Tech Red Raiders (28-7, 6-3) Last Week: 3

Oh my... Viva put Tech higher in the rankings? Those homers. Well, Orlando Garcia put the team on his back and made sure that if OU dropped a winnable series that Tech would be there to capitalize. Unfortunately, his 4 HR performance over the weekend wasn’t enough to keep Tech from dropping the finale to Baylor (Tune into The Air Raid Podcast later this week to hear our takes on that). Tech travels North to play K-State this weekend and I smell a sweep coming on. (Prediction: Tech sweeps KSU) (Last Week Prediction: Tech wins series over Baylor 2-1)

3. Oklahoma Sooners (27-8, 5-4) Last Week: 1

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Those Sooners just can’t handle success. After taking the series from Tech last weekend, it seems Oklahoma fell into a trap series with a good, but inconsistent Texas team. And when I say dropped, they almost got swept. But they escaped and have to be feeling very lucky. A nice, yet dangerous diversion has the Sooners traveling to Ann Arbor Easter Weekend for a matchup with #13 Michigan. (Prediction: OU loses series to Michigan 1-2) (Last Week Prediction: OU wins series over Texas 2-1)

4. West Virginia Mountaineers (19-11, 6-3) Last Week: 4

West Virginia drops the finale to Kansas. Probably one they wish they had back, but in any case they need to look forward to the big games coming up this week. A mid-weeker against #21 Maryland and then they host TCU this weekend. That series will be must watch for any baseball fan and may have serious postseason implications for WVU. (Prediction: West Virginia loses series to TCU 1-2) (Last Week Prediction: WVU wins series over KU 2-1)

5. Texas Longhorns (22-13, 6-6) Last Week: 7

Didn’t see this coming. Imagine if Texas hadn’t dropped the series to Kansas!!??!! This team continues to get better and I think they will continue to make a postseason push this weekend in Waco. If Coach Pearce gets this group on the postseason just go ahead and give him the Coach of the Year Award. (Prediction: UT wins series over Baylor 2-1) (Last Week Prediction: Texas loses series to OU 1-2)

6. Oklahoma State Cowboys (19-12, 3-6) Last Week: 6

Oklahoma State holds fast and possibly salvages any hope at a postseason birth for at least one more week. The Cowboys took two of three from Kansas St over the weekend led by DH Colin Simpson who went 5-9 with 7 RBIs. Oklahoma St should keep the momentum going as they go to Lawrence this weekend to take on the Jayhawks. (Prediction: OSU wins series over KU 2-1) (Last Week Prediction: OSU wins series over KSU 2-1)

7. Kansas Jayhawks (14-17, 4-5) Last Week: 5

Gotta be impressed with the Jayhawks of late. And with baseball showing signs of life, Kansas Athletics just may be at a turning point. Dropping a series in Morgantown wasn’t unexpected. However, being just one game below .500 in conference is impressive all things considered. I doubt they’ll be able to continue their success against a desperate OSU team, but if they somehow pull out the series win, they will have put all remaining opponents on notice. (Prediction: KU loses series to OSU 1-2) (Last Week Prediction: KU loses series to WVU 1-2)

8. Baylor Bears (20-12, 3-6) Last Week: 8

If not for an incredible comeback in the 9th during the series finale, Baylor would be DOA for the postseason. As it stands now, most pundits have the Bears squeaking into the postseason. Their hopes fade with every week and if they want to make a serious push, it needs to start this week against Texas. A series loss here and they would be officially done in my book. (Prediction: Baylor loses series to UT 1-2) (Last Week Prediction: Baylor loses series to Texas Tech 1-2)

9. Kansas State Wildcats (16-15, 1-8) Last Week: 9

Kansas State finally won their first conference game of the season against Oklahoma State! Now 1-8 and in a mighty tailspin from the promise that showed before conference, the outlook for the Wildcats is to play spoiler (unlikely) and count the days to football season. The Wildcats welcome Nebraska to town tonight and the Red Raiders this weekend. (Prediction: K-State gets swept by Tech) (Last Week Prediction: K-State loses series to OSU 1-2)
