Patrick Mahomes II had a decent showing at the NFL Combine this past weekend. Measuring in at 6’2 and running a 4.8 40 time, he is obviously not the fastest quarterback in his class, but he’s definitely stout. Mahomes ended the weekend logging a 30-inch vertical and a broad jump of 114.

His drops were smooth even though he is trained in the Air-Raid offense. Mahomes had the opportunity to once again play to his strength - that canon for an arm. He was throwing the ball 50+ yards without breaking a sweat.
However, Mahomes’ delivery is once again in question. In a weekend packed with talent, Mahomes did not have a chance to showcase his leadership to his fullest extent. He struggled with his five and seven-stop drop passes once again leaving the door open for Clemson’s Deshaun Watson to shine. Watson impressed the scouts with his clean and accurate delivery.
Another former Red Raider took a bit of Mahomes’ spotlight, Mr. Sunshine himself, Davis Webb. Webb was on full display next to Mahomes at the combine. He was pristine in the deep dig routes hitting receivers on the run. The timing was right. Webb’s stats included a 4.79 40 time, 33-inch vertical and a 118 broad jump.
COMBINE GRADE: C+
All in all, Red Raider QB talent was on full display last weekend showcasing the talent Texas Tech and Kliff Kingsbury continues to cultivate. However, my concern is Mahomes draft stock dropping to the second round because of his technique. Pure athleticism can only take quarterbacks so far. I wouldn’t be surprised if Webb and Mahomes are drafted close to one another.
