One thought, one take: let's go bowling!

Discussing potential landing spots for the Red Raiders this bowl season.

The thought.

The Red Raiders finished the season with a dramatic win over Texas and a 6-6 record, which means one thing: time to go bowling.

So, where are the boys heading? I've heard everything from the Zombie Cotton Bowl (Heart of Dallas) to the Academy Sports and Outdoors Texas Bowl; with opponents ranging from North Texas to Texas A&M. Where will the Red Raiders end up?

This is the order of selection for the Big 12.

  1. College Football Playoff.
  2. Automatic berth to one of the New Year's Six bowl games
  3. The Alamo Bowl vs Pac-12
  4. The Camping World Bowl versus ACC
  5. The Texas Bowl vs SEC.
  6. The Liberty Bowl vs SEC.
  7. The Cactus Bowl vs Pac-12.
  8. The Heart of Dallas Bowl vs Big Ten.

Currently the Big 12 Standings are as follows.

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Texas Christian University
  3. Oklahoma State
  4. Iowa State
  5. Kansas State
  6. West Virginia
  7. Texas
  8. Texas Tech
  9. Baylor
  10. Kansas

Just because Texas Tech is sitting at eighth in the Big 12 doesn't necessarily mean that they'll end up at the Heart Of Dallas Bowl. After the Alamo Bowl it's pretty much fair game who the Bowls bid for and their goal will be to create the most compelling and entertaining event possible.

The take.

On paper, the Heart Of Dallas bowl seems the most likely given where Tech is sitting in the Big 12. There is some speculation about a possible Texas Bowl matchup vs Texas A&M, however it seems more likely that Texas would get that bid since it would attract more national attention. Even so, the Aggies would most likely reject any bid that involves any of their former in-state rivals. The Liberty Bowl would probably select either West Virginia or Kansas State because of the closer proximity and higher standing, so I don't see any scenario where Tech goes to Memphis.

The most likely scenario would be the Cactus Bowl vs either Oregon or Arizona. Texas Tech fans historically travel very well and Lubbock is closer to Phoenix than any other Big 12 city. The deciding factor will be whether or not the Big 12 sends a team to the College Football Playoff. It they do, then the No. 2 team will go to a New Year's Six bowl, which means Oklahoma State will go to the Alamo Bowl instead of TCU/Oklahoma, leaving some of the better Bowls for the rest of the conference.

If the Big 12 is left out of the playoff, then Tech will land in Dallas. If not, then the Red Raiders will spend the day after Christmas in Phoenix.

Whats your take?
