Recruiting update: 3 commits and one big name walk-on

One recruit’s family controls the Star

NCAA Football: Texas Christian at Texas Tech Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Walking in a sparse concourse on Saturday afternoon during halftime of the game I was met by a mob of High School students with red and black lanyards with the big bold word, “recruit” on them.

At the time, Tech was only down 10-3 and I thought you know what, it could be worse. I never saw the recruits after the game, mostly because I was trying not to freeze to death from a 20-degree windchill, but I hope they were sold on the promise of what could be not on the reality of what took place. Here are a few of the players that were on campus this weekend.

Xavier Benson

He is a 6-3, 200 pound linebacker out of Texarkana Tx. Benson has already committed to Texas Tech which was his only Power 5 offer. His highlight video is full of offensive highlights although he is a defensive prospect. It seems that he has good speed but will probably need to put on several pounds to be able to compete in the Big 12.

Corey Fulcher

Corey is a 6-2, 180 pound receiver out of Dallas Tx. Like Benson, Fulcher has already committed to the Red Raiders. He plays all over the field (QB, RB, and WR). Although, not a burner but is very hard to get on the ground. In fact, he appears to be his team's main goal-line option. The way he plays reminds me of former Red Raider, Bradley Marquez.

Jaylon Hutchings

Jaylon is a 6-1, 270 pound defensive lineman out of Forney Tx. He has committed to the Red Raiders over the likes of UConn and K-State. He will likely need to add weight because he appears to be more of an interior lineman than a defensive end. Do yourself a favor and check out the 45-second mark in his highlight video to seem him crush a defensive back (that’s right this big boy also played running back).

Marvin Young Jr

He is a 6-2, 190 pound receiver out of South Grand Prairie High School. He is a 2019 prospect who already has great size and will only get bigger.

Gunnar Henderson

Gunnar is a 5-9, 165 receiver out of McAllen Tx. He’s obviously the smallest of all the receiver prospects on campus this weekend but he has some big-time interest from places like Georgia and Louisville. In his highlight, you repeatedly see him beat people to the corner or out run defenders who have an angle on him

In other recruiting news, it has been rumored that Texas Tech is recruiting the grandson of the most powerful owner in the NFL, Jerry Jones, for a preferred walk-on position. John Stephen Jones is a quarterback at Highland Park and appears to be drawing interest from the Red Raiders. At just 5-10 and 175 pounds, it would be hard to imagine Jones having much of an impact at Texas Tech but he is not getting the offer from his name alone. Last season, he led his team to a state championship and just this week had 457 passing yards in his opening round playoff win.
