Texas Tech Recruiting Roundup: Who can be the next great WR?

The Red Raiders have had some great wide receivers in the past, could more be heading their way in 2017?

In last week's edition I covered a few defensive linemen the Red Raiders had offers out to and one that I thought Texas Tech could land, Dayo Odeyingbo, committed to Vanderbilt this week. So this week I'll take a look at an offensive skills group and one that Texas Tech has had some stars at over the years. Yes, I'm talking about wide receivers. Even though there were 20+ wide receivers on the roster last year, you have to remember that most of the time Texas Tech runs 4 and 5 wide sets. Today I'll look at 3 recruits who along with Bronson Boyd could make a name for themselves at Texas Tech.

KD Nixon | 5'8", 185 lbs | Wide Receiver

DeSoto High School (Desoto, TX)

24/7 | Rivals | Scout

K.D. Nixon plays at DeSoto High School which has been producing some of the top talent in the DFW area for quite some time now. Nixon committed to Tennessee back in April but last week he decommitted from the Volunteers. As of now, Nixon holds 18 offers, 1 of those being from Texas Tech. Some schools that have offered him are Arizona St, California, Colorado, Missouri, and Oklahoma St. He could pick up an offer from the likes of an Ohio St or Oklahoma as well. Nixon would be a great fit in the slot for the Red Raiders. I was able to see him up close at The Opening Dallas Regional and I really liked what I saw in him. He is a very natural route runner and makes smooth catches in stride. Nixon could be a slot speedster that Texas Tech is known for. In the first play in his film below, don't tell me that doesn't look like Jakeem Grant 2.0.

Tahj Capehart | 5'10", 185 lbs | Wide Receiver

Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School (Virginia Beach, VA)

24/7 | Rivals | Scout

Tahj Capehart currently holds 21 offers in total and it appears that Texas Tech would be considered a long shot, but that doesn't keep us from hoping they land him. The Red Raiders offered Capehart back in January 2015 and they were one of only a few offers, but that list has grown since then. He's now got offers from the likes of Maryland, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Georgia. Virginia isn't necessarily a recruiting hotbed for Texas Tech but they did land the 3-star offensive linemen Zach Adams last year though. As I mentioned, the Red Raiders would need some things to fall into place for them to land him but crazier things have happened.

Hezekiah Jones | 6'0", 195 lbs | Wide Receiver

Stafford High School (Stafford, TX)

24/7 | Rivals | Scout

Hezekiah Jones had been committed to Baylor but announced his decommitment at the end of May. Jones holds 25 offers at the moment with some of them being from the likes of Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Michigan St, Alabama and Auburn. As you can see, Texas Tech faces some stiff competition to land his services. The Red Raiders offered Jones back in March 2015 and at the time it was one of his first offers. Like Capehart, it may take some luck and other things to happen for the Red Raiders to land Jones but if they did he could be a game changer. Jones is versatile and could play inside or out for the Red Raiders.

The summer recruiting camps did not disappoint. The Red Raiders have gained several commits so far this summer and the 2017 class is shaping out to be a good one. The recruiting cycle now goes into a bit of a dead period but that doesn't mean we won't see any more commits come in. VTM will keep you posted shall any new Red Raiders come our way.
