Texas Tech Recruiting Roundup, 6/22

The fans voted and they want more defense for the 2017 class.

Last week Texas Tech picked up two more defensive back commits with Adrian Frye and Kamren Curl. Frye is from the Houston area and attended the Houston satellite camp. Curl hails from Oklahoma and holds 16 other offers at the moment. The 2017 recruiting class now sits at 12 with Frye and Curl being the 3rd and 4th DB commits. The class has 6 OL, 4 DB, 1 WR and 1 QB at the moment. Last week I added a poll for the viewers to vote on what position group they wanted to see focused on and with 46% of the vote defensive line won. So this week I'll take a look at several d-linemen who could end up being Red Raiders.

Dayo Odeyingbo | 6'5", 240 lbs | Defensive End

Ranchview High School (Carrollton, TX)

24/7  | Rivals | Scout

Texas Tech offered Odeyingbo back in April and he now currently holds 18 offers. So far he has camped with Texas A&M and Texas this summer according to 24/7. To win his services the Red Raiders will have to beat out the likes of Oklahoma, Baylor, Michigan, Texas, Texas A&M and a few others. Odeyingbo can play just about anywhere. In his Hudl below he's seen playing DE, DT, LB and some tight end. If he were to end up a Red Raider I'd expect him to play a Pete Robertson hybrid type of role. He's athletic enough to defend the pass and quick enough to rush the quarterback.

To be completely honest, besides Odeyingbo there aren't too many realistic defensive linemen the Red Raiders have offered at the moment. According to 24/7 there are a total of 10 offers out to defensive linemen at the moment and only 4 are uncommitted including Odeyingbo. Marvin Wilson and Damion Daniels are two others, but it looks like these guys will end up elsewhere and I consider Texas Tech long shots to land them. Wilson is regarded as a top 5 national recruit and Daniels, while having Texas Tech ties, doesn't seem too interested in the Red Raiders. Jayden Peevy is the other uncommitted DL target the Red Raiders have offered. Texas Tech offered Peevy on April 1st and he then committed to Baylor on April 4th. Peevy decommitted from Baylor at the end of May and it now looks like Texas A&M has a really good shot of landing him.

As Texas Tech offers more defensive linemen I will write up recruiting profiles on them, but as I mentioned for whatever reason the Red Raiders don't have a lot of offers out at the moment to defensive linemen. You would think that there would be more than 10 offers out but then again they got 8 defensive line commits in the 2016 class. Either way, I agree with the viewers and believe defensive line should be the coaching staff's main focus for the remainder of the 2017 recruiting cycle.
