This week I take a look at 3 defensive recruits who the Red Raiders are targeting. Two are cornerbacks, 1 is highly coveted and 1 who is a JUCO prospect. The other recruit is the brother of a current college football player that Texas Tech was oh so close to signing.
Chevin Calloway | 5'10", 180 lbs | Cornerback
Bishop Dunne High School (Dallas, TX)
24/7 | Rivals
| Scout
Chevin Calloway is racking up offers, he now has 27 in total. Texas Tech offered Calloway last April and face some stiff competition in landing him. Calloway is a 4-star across the main three recruiting sites and I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually becomes a 5-star this coming season. Measuring at 5'10", Calloway isn't a super tall corner but he is physical. In man, he's not afraid to jam receivers at the line and in zone he has great closing speed to get to the receiver and disrupt the pass. Calloway is also great at reading screens. He sheds the would-be blocker and gets behind the line of scrimmage. As I mentioned, Texas Tech faces some tough competition to land Calloway but if they do he'd make an immediate impact in the secondary.
Broderick Thomas | 6'2" 180 lbs | Cornerback
Cisco College (Cisco, TX)
24/7 NR | Rivals NR | Scout NR
Broderick Thomas is an interesting case. Thomas graduated high school in 2013 from West Columbia, joined Texas A&M Commerce's football team and was redshirted his freshman (2013) season. I'm not sure what happened at A&M Commerce but Thomas has been with Cisco College since Fall 2015. Texas Tech offered Thomas on 3/2 and he holds one other offer at the moment from Tarleton State. The coaching staff must see something in Thomas that others just don't see at the moment. One word that comes to mind when I watch Thomas is scrappy. At 6'2", he has leverage on a lot of wide receivers when it comes to jump balls. Also with such a big frame, Thomas doesn't hit like other corners. It'd be interesting to see if he does end up at Texas Tech, would the coaches move him to safety?
Damion Daniels | 6'2", 310 lbs | Defensive Tackle
Bishop Dunne High School (Dallas, TX)
24/7 | Rivals
| Scout
Texas Tech was one of the finalist for Darrion Daniels, but in the end he signed with Oklahoma State. Darrion is the older brother of Damion and he's turned into a stud defensive linemen for the Cowboys. It's also noted that Daniels is the high school teammate of Chevin Calloway. At the moment, Daniels holds 16 offers and Texas Tech isn't one of them. Though the Red Raiders haven't offered Daniels you would have to imagine that they'll get in on the race for his services. It's almost comical seeing small offensive linemen try to block Daniels. He can over power them with ease or hit them with a finesse move to get around them. Daniels as an interior defensive linemen for Texas Tech would be an awesome addition.
Texas Tech's 2017 Junior Day is taking place this weekend. Last year a lot of eventual 2016 commits attended so it'll be interesting to see who's all on campus. If there is any breaking news or a definitive list of attendees we will make sure to get that out to our viewers.
