Red Raider of the Game
After Houston took a 1-0 lead in the very beginning of the game, Red Raider hitters were being retired rather effectively until Steven "The Bull" Smith came up to the plate in the 4th. He smacked the crap out of the ball, sending it to deep left field. Pretty cool to hit a home run in an MLB park
Play That Impacted the Game
In the bottom of the 6th, with the game still tied at 1, the Red Raiders were able to get to starting pitcher Andrew Lantrip and put runners on base. With the bases loaded, Neslony played into a fielder's choice with Garcia getting the 2nd out of the inning at the plate. Gardner was able to single and load the bases for Ryan Long, who singled 2 runs in and Tech would lead the rest of the game.
Stat of the Game
One. The Red Raider pitching staff only allowed 1 extra base hit to a top 10 Houston team. It was a double in the first inning that would score a run, but nothing after that.
Forgotten Play of the Game
The top of the 8th inning started with a couple infield singles plus a throwing error, and Houston capitalized on having a runner on 3rd with a sac fly to cut the lead to 3-2. After a stolen base and an advance on a passed ball, the tying run was at 3rd but Hayden Howard was able to get a big strikeout to end the Cougar threat and preserved the victory for Tech.
Big Reason Tech Won the Game
A stifling pitching attack that only allowed 5 hits, and only 2 by the bullpen, coupled with 8 Red Raiders coming to bat in the 6th inning pushed the Red Raiders to a win in a close game against a very good team in their own city on a big stage.
