1. Red Raider of the Game
Eric Gutierrez was the player of the game, something that isn't unexpected, and probably will be common this season. Gute had 6 plate appearances, drew 2 walks, got hit by a pitch, and officially went 2-3 with 3 runs and an RBI.
2. Play That (Almost) Impacted the Game
Last year, one of this team's most pressing issues was a high amount of runners left on base, squandering scoring opportunities. By the end of the 3rd inning, we had already stranded 8, including a bases loaded 1st inning. This is one trend that cannot continue once we get to conference play, and a reason why we only won by 5 this game.
3. Stat of the Game
46. From the time Neslony grounded out for the 2nd out of the 3rd inning until the inning was over, it took the Bearkats 3 pitchers and 46 pitches to get the final out of the inning. The SHSU starting pitcher threw 81 pitches in only 2.2 innings, allowing the Red Raider bats to get to the bullpen early and often.
4. Forgotten Play of the Game
In the 1st inning, after we stranded runners on base, SHSU did the same. They had the bases loaded and 2 outs, but luckily Gingery was able to get Rojas to fly out.
5. Big Reason Tech Won the Game
The bullpen came up big again, pitching 6.2 innings and only allowing 1 run on 6 hits, coming into the game when it was only a 1-run lead for the Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders next take the field in the Shriner's Classic, playing a 3-game series this weekend in Houston at Minute Maid Park. Tech will face 3 Top 25 teams starting at noon on Friday. The games are scheduled to be televised on MLB Network.
