Texas Tech Lands DT Ivory Jackson

Texas Tech lands a West Texas defensive tackle.

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Tech continues the defensive commit momentum by landing Amarillo defensive tackle, Ivory Jackson. He is listed at 6'4", 270 lbs. Jackson is a 2-star recruit according to Rivals and unrated by Scout, 247 and ESPN.

There are several things about Jackson that are big besides his size. First of all, he is a West Texas kid. I love keeping West Texas kids at home. I understand kids like James Castleman and Mason Walters wanting to move away but it stings a bit more to lose out on these kids to other schools. I especially hate it when they are Big 12 schools. Since Lubbock isn't close to a major metropolitan area, I feel like we should be the hometown school for all West Texas kids. That isn't the case, but feels like it should be which is why it stings when we don't land them.

Secondly, he had a handful of others outside of Tech. The most notable is the Kansas State offer. Any kid that Bill Snyder wants, I am all in on. He knows how to evaluate talent. He also knows how to coach them up too, but he is an excellent evaluator first.

Based on the numbers alone, I expect him to provide depth in 2016 unless we land a few more JUCO DTs in this class. I don't imagine that will happen, so I expect him to play.

His film is below. You will notice he doesn't carry a lot of bad weight at this point, which is great. He has a good motor. I love his ability to read the play and then make the tackle. He doesn't always overpower the defender but uses his arms to keep the defenders at a distance so he can shed them and get to the ball carrier. As bad as we have been at landing high school DTs, I would take 3 to 4 of these guys every year.
