Win #3 - Texas Tech prevails in Ft.Worth

New, comment

In a game that reminded me of a couple games in 2003 Tech topped the Frogs in 3OTs. Eric Ward and Seth Doege led us to victory.

Location: Ft.Worth, TX - Amon G. Carter Stadium

Opponent:  TCU Horned Frogs

Attendance: 47,894

Score: Texas Tech 56 TCU 53

We've all heard of trap games.  This was exactly that.  This game was sandwiched between a blowout of the 5th ranked Mountaineers (also part of this top 10) and a battle in the Little Apple against the 4th ranked Kansas State Wildcats the following week.  TCU was new to the Big 12 and absolutely no threat of knocking us off.  Or were they?

A competitive shootout throughout with neither team taking command for any stretch.  TCU was able to move the ball throughout but fortunately the Red Raider defense bent but didn't break and forced TCU into 6 fg attempts.  Unfortunately for us their Freshman kicker nailed all 6 attempts including a 42 yarder with 18 seconds remaining in the game that sent it into overtime.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the first and second overtimes.  The Red Raiders held the Frogs to a FG in the 3rd giving us an opportunity to send what was a largely Tech audience home happy.  They did just that.  Seth Doege hit Alex Torres off a shotgun snap play action for an 8 yard TD to win the game.  It was Doege's 7th TD pass of the game (career high) and Torres 2nd TD reception.   Eric Ward was huge in this game, as he was throughout the entire season, catching 3 touchdown passes.  Tech dominated the Sportscenter Top 10 highlights that evening and that included a true gem of a catch from Ward.  I'd argue there should have been a fourth in that Top 10.  See the third highlight below.  Great play drawn up by Neal Brown and Seth Doege showing some true grit by delivering despite taking a shot.

Another great win for the Red Raiders!
