Texas Tech Recruiting Roundup, 5/7

Yet another new QB target, a new commit and a WR target Texas Tech got their eyes on first.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Last week I featured Terry Wilson, a newly offered QB target, but Wilson didn't stay on the market very long. This week he committed to Nebraska which is unfortunate because I really liked what he had to offer. Tech acted swiftly after Wilson's commitment and offered a new quarterback target out of California. While the Red Raiders missed out on a commitment this week they did land one of their own in a defensive back. I'll also take a look at a wide receiver from Wichita Falls which is where former Texas Tech standout, Eric Ward, was from.

Patrick O'Brien | Quarterback

San Juan Hills High School (San Juan Capistrano, CA)

24/7: 87 | Rivals: 3-Star | Scout: 3-Star

Terry Wilson was the new quarterback target last week but has since committed to Nebraska. Next up, Patrick O'Brien. O'Brien holds multiple offers at the moment and one being from Nebraska. You would have to think O'Brien would push Nebraska to the back burner after Wilson's commitment but you never know. The first thing I notice with O'Brien is his arm. He can launch the ball 20+ yards with ease and is accurate with it as well. Sometimes QBs can sling the ball down field on deep routes but have to hope their receiver comes down with it. With O'Brien, he can chunk it down field and deliver it on a dime. O'Brien can also run. While he doesn't have blazing speed he can still get the job done. Think of his running style as Andrew Luck's. While California isn't a recruiting hot bed for Tech, they did land receiver Tony Brown last year and maybe that will open the window for us to start landing some recruits from the Golden State.

Neiman Armstrong | Cornerback

DeSoto High School (DeSoto, TX)

24/7: 80 | Rivals: 2-Star | Scout: NR

This week Texas Tech landed another recruit for 2016 class in cornerback, Neiman Armstrong. Armstrong is from DeSoto, TX and provides Texas Tech with a possible pipeline. Tech of course once had DeSoto QB Tristen Wallace commit but later decommit. The Red Raiders have also offered cornerback AJ Green from DeSoto as well. It would be pretty nice if Tech can land the duo of DeSoto corners. Armstrong has nice height at 6'1" and would be able to cover some of the tall Big 12 receivers. Last year Armstrong played at Dallas Carter and wore many hats. He lined up at receiver, cornerback, and safety. This year it seems as though he will play primarily on the defensive side of the ball for DeSoto. He does seem to be a physical player who can jam receivers at the line or fight through blocks.

T.J. Vasher | Wide Receiver

Rider High School (Wichita Falls, TX)

24/7: 88 | Rivals: 4-Star | 4-Star

The Red Raiders were the first to offer T.J. Vasher back in November and hopefully that will keep us on his radar. Vasher goes to Rider High School which is the same high school former Tech receiver Eric Ward attended. After Ward was released by the Tennessee Titans he went back to Rider to coach for a bit but has since signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. Vasher has a nice frame at 6'4" and could be one of the next great Tech receivers. Vasher is a long-strider and runs crisp routes. He can run a 3-yard slant or run a go route for 30+ yards. On screens he can pick up 10-15 yards or bust it for a long TD as well. It's also noted that Vasher attended Tech's junior day back in March. Vasher is a physical receiver and would make for a nice weapon for the years to come.

Texas Tech still hasn't landed a QB commit and it seems like once we do start to eye-in on someone, they commit elsewhere. Tech has hosted a few guys on some unofficial visits to Lubbock but hasn't offered them. With those recruits, such as Sam Glaesmann (Waco Midway) and David Johnson (South Oak Cliff), offers could come during the upcoming season. I'm sure the Red Raider coaching staff has a game plan and I look forward to seeing what they have up their sleeves.
