Texas Tech, Big 12 Previews & Predictions: Week 7

Conner readies you for Week 7 in Big 12 action!

Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

100% of the VTM readers picked Iowa State to lose to Tech, but hardly any picked them to by absolutely demolished by Tech. I know that hindsight is 20/20, but we all really should have seen this. The Tech offense is back to it’s ways of old in scoring many many many points, as evidenced by being one of only 3 teams (TCU & Baylor) that are still averaging scoring 50 points a game. Iowa State, well, they pretty much stink like that alien thing that Han Solo cuts open to keep Luke Skywalker warm in Empire Strikes Back…

Just like last week was a repeat winner, this week is too. Alfergus is the guest picker for the second time. Good luck!

If you want to be the guest picker for next week comment below or tweet @ConnerCrisp your score prediction for Tech-Kansas. Whoever is closest to choosing the winning margin wins. Ties are decided by me. Check back to this article Sunday night and I will have announced the winner by 10 PM.

Last week’s guest picker, @kchantx21, and I shared all the same picks, so no change in the winning percentage competition.

Conner Last Week: 3-2, Conner Overall 35-7 (.833)

Guest Picker @kchantx21: 3-2, VTM Readers Overall: 27-5 (.843)

Saturday, October 17

West Virginia Mountaineers (3-2 Overall, 0-2 Big 12) at #2 Baylor Bears (5-0 Overall, 1-2 Big 12)

McClane Stadium; Waco, TX; 11:00 AM; FOX

What do we really know about WVU? We know that they can take care of business against their easy opponents, see the 3-0 non-conference record. BUT when they play against good opponents, they can’t win, see 0-2 conference record. I’m not sure what to make of this team, but Dana Holgerson’s boys better win some of these close games if he will be there next year. We DO know that Baylor is a top team, if not the top team in the Big 12. Was anyone else hoping that they would hang 83 points on Kansas so Tech would no longer hold the record for most Big 12 points scored against?... Mountaineers 24, Bears 52

Alfergus' Pick: Baylor 60, West Virginia 31

Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-2 Overall, 1-2 Big 12) at Kansas Jayhawks (0-5 Overall, 0-2 Big 12)

Memorial Stadium; Lawrence, KS; 11:00 AM; Fox Sports 1

If Tech’s scoring average falls below 50 because of this game, I would be incredibly shocked. Just like last week was a good game to clean up dropped balls, missed tackles, etc., this week is too. I know I’ve said that Kansas games are known as the "Do The Chores Game of the Week", but with them playing against Tech I rescind that. For a half. This game should be well in hand by then. As far as road games go, it won’t get any easier than this for Tech. Kansas fans, 21 more days until basketball season tips off… Red Raiders 57, Jayhawks 24

Alfergus' Pick: Texas Tech 63, Kansas 24

#19 Oklahoma Sooners (4-1 Overall, 1-1 Big 12) at Kansas State Wildcats (3-2 overall, 0-2 Big 12) Game of the Week

Bill Snyder Family Stadium; Manhattan, KS; 2:30 PM; ABC

The best way to explain these teams is to use dating examples: Oklahoma- That hot girl that you always had a crush on and she would give you just enough attention to keep your interest. However, at the end of the day, your dreams would go unfulfilled. Kansas State- That girl who may not be the prettiest girl in the world, but can’t you see that she’s the one who understands you, been there all along, so why can’t you see that she belongs with you? Yes, I just inserted a Taylor Swift lyric in a football column, and if you have anything negative to say about it, I’ll shake it off… Sooners 24, Wildcats 31

Alfergus' Pick: Oklahoma 31, Kansas State 20

#3 TCU Horned Frogs (6-0 Overall, 3-0 Big 12) at Iowa State Cyclones (2-3 Overall, 1-2 Big 12)

Jack Trice Stadium; Ames, IA; 6:00 PM; ESPN2

While this won’t be as ugly as Baylor-Kansas was last week, it will still be ugly. One reason that I am an NFL man over NCAA is because style points matter in NCAA. TCU has lost some style points with their close wins over non-ranked, but good opponents. When teams as good as TCU plays teams as bad as Iowa State, the good teams try to regain or build upon their style point cred. Unfortunately, for the second week in a row the young men at ISU are going to get beat. Bad… Horned Frogs 63, Cyclones 17

Alfergus' Pick: TCU 45, Iowa State 24

OFF: Texas Longhorns, #16 Oklahoma State Cowboys

Charlie Strong got a win that will keep his critics quiet for a little bit. Good for him. I know that it may be a tad taboo to say something positive about the UT program, but Charlie Strong is a good man. He may or may not be a good coach, but he is developing young men to live great, productive lives off the field. For that, he should be commended.
