Texas Tech Crushes Iowa State 66-31

Texas Tech shows no hangover from back to back losses to Top 5 teams to destroy Iowa State on homecoming weekend in Lubbock.

Ryan Smith

Coming off the Baylor loss, Tech faces Iowa State for Homecoming in Lubbock. How did Tech respond? Did history of 2011 repeat? Lets find out!

1st Quarter:

Tech receives first and drives inside the 10 before the drive stalls. Clayton Hatfield would make a 24 yard field goal to give Tech a 3-0 lead. On Iowa State's first play from scrimmage, Tevin Madison intercepts Sam Richardson's pass setting up a 13 yard TD run from DeAndre Washington. Tech leads 10-0 with 10:44 left in the 1st quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Iowa St works down the field and gets a TD pass from Richardson to Quenton Bundrage for 33 yards cutting Tech's lead to 10-7. The drive covered 66 yards in 3:41. Tech wastes little time going 75 yards in 1 play, Mahomes to Grant. Tech leads 17-7.

Iowa State goes 3 and out and Madison almost gets his 2nd INT of the game.

End of 1st Qtr: Texas Tech 17.... Iowa State 7

2nd Quarter:

After forcing a Tech punt, Iowa State drives into Tech territory, and on 4th and 4 from the 37 yard line, converts down inside the 5 to set up 1st and goal. Iowa St would run it in to cut the lead to 17-14. Tech's next drive results in a TD that shouldn't be when Mahomes hit Reginald Davis for a TD for 33 yards. The play is reviewed but stands, even though Davis clearly stepped on the back boundary. The drive covers 75 yards in 2:15. Tech leads 24-14.

Iowa State's next drive would stall at the Tech 23. Iowa St would miss it's 40 yard field goal attempt to keep Tech's lead at 10. Tech would have back to back penalites to force a 3rd and 30 conversion with a Mahomes to Ja'Deion High right at the sticks. Two plays later, a screen pass to Washington would go for a TD for 49 yards. Tech's lead grows to 31-14 with 8:21 left in the half.

Iowa State, down 17, is forced to punt after Gary Moore sacks Richardson on a 3rd and 11. Tech would take over on their own 24 with 4:59 left in the half. After converting a few first downs, facing a 3rd and 9... Mahomes escapes pressure twice to find Grant near the goal line for a 37 yard TD. Tech leads 38-14 with 2:42 left.

Down 24, Iowa State badly needs a score and starts their drive with a Mike Warren 51 yard run deep into Tech territory. Iowa State would finally score with 1:30 left in the half to cut the lead to 38-21.

Tech would not be able to do anything with the last possession of the half.

Halftime: Texas Tech 38.... Iowa State 21

3rd Quarter:

Iowa State would open the half with the ball, but Tech's defense would force a punt and Tech would take over on their own 23 yard line. After forcing a Tech punt, Iowa State would return the punt to their own 40 yard line and beginning a drive that would see them only pass once on a 3rd and goal. 11 plays, 10 runs and a FG attempt made from 20 to cut the lead to two scores 38-24.

Almost sensing the game getting a lot closer than Tech would like, the offense kicks into gear. A drive with playcalling heavy on the run, Justin Stockton breaks free and scores on a 54 yard TD with 3:37 left in the 3rd to put Tech up by 21.

On a 3rd down, Richardson overthrows his receiver and J.J. Gaines intercepts and runs it back to the ISU 29 yard line. The second interception thrown by Richardson and Tech leads the turnover battle 2-0.

End of 3rd Qtr: Texas Tech 45.... Iowa State 24

4th Quarter:

Tech starts the 4th inside the ISU 10 yard line and would waste no time in scoring as Mahomes hits Johnathan Giles and puts Tech back in control 52-24.

Tech and Iowa State would trade punts as Davis Webb and some other backups would enter the game. Davis Webb would hit Jonathan Giles for a 21 yard TD pass to put Tech up 59-24 with 7:35 left in the game. The drive took 0:26 and covered 41 yards.

Kingsbury's headset came off shortly after Tech's last drive with Tech firmly in control and with Iowa State put their backups in as well. Texas Tech also gets their first look at Iowa transfer Nic Shimonek.

Tech would add onto the score as DeMarcus Felton would break a 53 yard TD run to make the score 66-24.

Iowa State would add a score with under a minute left to make the score a little more respectable, but it wasn't even that close.

Added surprise, Payne Sullins gets some work in the last minute as the 4th QB used by Tech today.

FINAL: Texas Tech 66.... Iowa State 31

Prediction vs. Reality

My Prediction: Texas Tech 56 - ISU 24 (6-0, 3-0)

Reality: Tech came in and handled business as they should have. No hangover from the two Top 5 losses, winning the turnover battle and look to win next week and go into Norman 5-2.
