Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | Baseball's Walk-Off Win; Smith Gets Paid; Calipari and Smith

Baseball gets a walk-off win against West Virginia. Will Smith signs his contract with the Dallas Cowboys. A good article on John Calipari and Tubby Smith and their time at Kentucky. Graham Harrell talks about his time at Texas Tech with Leach.

Walk-Off Win. I've updated the weekend open thread for the West Virginia and Texas Tech series, with links and video, but you should know that Texas Tech got a walk-off win in the 11th inning.

Burleson Named Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Congrats to second baseman Bryant Burleson for being named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.

Smith Gets Paid. Linebacker Will Smith is already getting paid as he's already signed his contract with the Dallas Cowboys.  With contracts and picks slotted for contracts, there's no point to negotiate, just get the deal done and get to work.  Would guess that's exactly what Smith did.

Calipari and Smith. Hat-tip to Dan Swany for finding this link, a good look at the what-if in terms of the difference between John Calipari and Tubby Smith with their times at Kentucky:

If Tubby Smith wins those Elite 8 games against Michigan State or Marquette (maybe even just 1 or 2 of the 3) and adds another Final 4 or two to his Kentucky resume', how differently would we look back on his time at Kentucky? If John Calipari's and Kentucky lose that First Round game against Princeton when Brandon Knight makes the game-winning lay-up, or Wichita State hits the last second shot against Kentucky this year in the second round... how differently would we look back on his time so far at Kentucky?

Harrell on Leach. New offensive quality control guy for Washington St. did a Q&A with ESPN and this was pretty good when he asked if the offense has changed:

Harrell: Not hardly at all. When I was at Tech, it would frustrate me. Sometimes I would have an idea and I would think it would be good, tell it to [Leach] and he'd say, 'That's not what we do.' All right, there you have it. After being gone, playing elsewhere and seeing other things, I respect him more and more. That's what makes his offense so good, it's that he has an identity. He has what he believes in and he says, ‘We're going to be so good at it that it doesn't matter if the other team knows what we do or not. We're just going to out-execute them.' I think that's as a very good approach. I think the problem with too many teams is that that don't say, 'This is who we are.' Because they haven't changed a whole lot it makes it really easy to jump right back into it.

Big 12 Track and Field Championships. Texas Tech is hosting the Big 12 Track and Field Championships this weekend and the #6 Red Raiders and the Lady Raiders will begin at 11:00 am this morning.  The official site has a link to follow along with all of the action.
