The Lady Raiders (6-7, 0-2) play their first Big12 Conference road game tonight against the #11 Iowa State Cyclones (13-0, 2-0) at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, IA at 7:00pm CST. This is will be an extremely hard game for the Lady Raiders. They are going up against an undefeated team and they are playing on the road in a very unfriendly arena. The Cyclones' fans always show up and the place will most likely be packed and very loud for the Cyclones team. This is the 23rd meeting for these teams and Iowa State leads the series 12-10.
This Lady Raiders team has not been able to find its footing and have struggled and fallen extremely flat in Big12 play so far. They did show a great deal of determination in the game on Sunday, Jan 5th against the TCU Horned Frogs and almost came back to tie the game but they ran out of time and TCU made all of their shots and FTs count in the final few minutes. The Lady Raiders did come out fast against the Horned Frogs but around the 10 minute mark in the first half the Lady Raiders shooting went cold and TCU led at the half 30-15. Tech did get into a rhythm in the 2nd half but they just could not make up the ground they had lost and TCU made very few mistakes.
I am hoping that this team has somehow found their flow and can make at least a good showing against the Cyclones and of course I hope that Tech pulls put the upset and wins tonight. Tech needs to be aggressive on the boards and make the points on the inside if they are to win this game. The Lady Raiders need to come out hot and ready to play. Tech needs to focus on their FGs and make them count.
One of the improving trends for this Lady Raiders team is they have finally improved their Free-throws and are averaging 75.6% completions. They have also been strong in Blocked Shots averaging 3.9 per game. But they are falling short on FGs and 3-Ptrs with only 40% and 29.6% respectively. The Lady Raiders have to get better at protecting the ball as they are averaging over 18 turnovers.
Iowa State is undefeated going into this game.
The Cyclones' Head Coach, Bill Fennelly is in his 19th season with the Iowa State. His career record is 575-235 and with Iowa State 409-182. His teams have made 16 NCAA Championship appearances in his 25 seasons as a head coach and he ranks among the nation's top 25 active women's basketball college coaches in overall winning percentage. Fennelly is considered the dean of Big 12 women's basketball coaches and was granted a lifetime contract from Iowa State in 2007.
