......
The Lady Raiders (6-12, 0-7) go up against the #20/17 Iowa State Cyclones (14-4, 3-4) tonight at "The USA" in Lubbock at 7:00pm CST. Texas Tech is still looking for their first win in Big12 play and have struggled this season. This game will be the 24th time that the Lady Raiders and the Lady Cyclones have met. Iowa State leads the series (13-10) after beating Tech in Ames, IA on January 8, 2014 and both games last season.
The Lady Raiders along with the Red Raider MBB team handed out free hot dogs and t-shirts this week to drum up support for both of the programs and to get people in the stands at "The USA". The men play at 3pm and then the women play at 7pm. I hope that "The USA" is full today for the Red Raiders and I hope the fans then stick around and cheer on the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Raiders are still looking for their first win in Big12 play and I am hoping they can pull it together tonight and get the upset over Iowa State. The Lady Raiders need a win and I am hoping a win would give this team and program a motivating lift to get a few more wins before the end of conference play. They continue to have one player, Amber Battle, that consistently scores and rebounds but they need other players to step up. They need to figure out the scoring droughts seen in each of the Big12 games and they need to improve their defense. If they can make a higher percentage of their field-goal attempts count and protect the ball and control the flow of the game then they have a chance to pull out the win tonight.
Cyclone women's basketball is synonymous with the three-point knock down. The Iowa State program have had at least one 3-pt basket in every game since 1995. The Cyclones will probably reach a 600 consecutive game mark in the game tonight against the Lady Raiders but I am hoping the Tech defense steps up and breaks that streak and also gets the upset over the Cyclones. Iowa State was undefeated in Big12 play a few weeks ago when Tech played them in Ames, IA but have lost their last three games against Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Kansas State. The Cyclones average 9.28 3-Ptrs per game which are mainly attributed to Junior Forward Brynn Williamson (41.3 %) and Freshman Guard Jadda Buckley (52.9%).
The two players to watch on the Cyclones team are Senior Forward Hallie Christofferson and Junior Guard Nikki Moody. Christofferson averages 19.7 points per game and 7.8 Rebounds per game. Moody averages 11.7 points per game and tops the Big 12 with 97 Assists (5.3 ppg). The Cyclones are currently in 7th place in the Big12 standings. They are number one in the Big12 in the following stats: Free-Throw % (79.1) and 3-Point FG% (35.5) and Defensive Rebound % (74.6).
The Cyclones' Head Coach, Bill Fennelly is in his 19th season with the Iowa State. His career record is 576-239 and with Iowa State 410-186. His teams have made 17NCAA Championship appearances in his 25 seasons as a head coach and he ranks among the nation's top 25 active women's basketball college coaches in overall winning percentage. Fennelly is considered the dean of Big 12 women's basketball coaches and was granted a lifetime contract from Iowa State in 2007.
