Former Texas Tech commit Mildren Montgomery has switched his commitment to Tulsa (via Tulsa World) after apparently being asked to greyshirt this year, as the staff has also apparently done with L.J. Collier, who ended up committing to TCU over the weekend, and Deionte Noel, who most likely will commit to Houston. That leaves only Justin Murphy and Robert Castaneda as the lone offensive line commits from the high school ranks and Dontae Levingston as the lone JUCO line commit. Texas Tech is looking at another JUCO offensive lineman in A.J. Allen, who is supposedly going to visit Texas Tech this weekend.
You might be concerned about the idea of not a lot of youth as far as offensive line commits, but Texas Tech had four high school line commits last year (Josh Outlaw, Baylen Brown, Cody Hayes and Poet Thomas) so there is some young depth along the offensive line.
The other thought is that a lot of these players that are being asked to greyshirt are simply going somewhere else, with the lone exception being DB Joseph Clark, who was hurt late in the year. I don't blame any of these kids for looking somewhere else and committing to programs that are willing to give them scholarships right now. I do wish them luck, but perhaps this is an indication of HC Kliff Kingsbury wanting the best possible talent right now. The type of talent that can walk in and compete right now.
