Reports | Smith and Tyndall Are Candidates for Texas Tech Men's Head Coach Position

Multiple reports are confirming that former Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and current Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall are being interviewed for the head coaching position at Texas Tech.

USA TODAY Sports

There are two different reports that the search for the Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach position is still underway.

ESPN is reporting that former Minnesota Golden Gopher head coach Tubby Smith was meet with Texas Tech officials as early as today to discuss the head coaching position:

One source said Smith was expected to meet with Red Raiders officials as early as Thursday. Smith, who won an NCAA title at Kentucky in 1998, was fired by Minnesota on Monday after six years at the school. The Golden Gophers went 21-13 this season, losing to Florida in the NCAA tournament round of 32.

Smith previously coached at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky and Minnesota and his Minnesota team lost a first second round game in this year's NCAA tournament after going 21-13 this year.

And for a bit of a curve ball, a website called HoopDirt is reporting that Southern Miss head oach Donnie Tyndall could be on campus interviewing today:

The "hot" name at Texas Tech right now is Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall. He just got knocked out of the NIT after a 27 win season. Multiple sources have told me that he is headed to Texas Tech today to interview.

Tyndall completely turned around an awful Morehead St. team and most recently took Southern Mississippi within one game of the finals of the NIT after going 27-10 this year.

This news of additional candidates is coming off the heels of last night's news that Kimball SG Keith Frazier had committed to Texas Tech, but then Frazier confirmed that he would be waiting until after the McDonald's All-America Game.#
