As mentioned above, KVIA is the first to report (from what I can tell) that Texas Tech has expressed interest in New Mexico St. head basketball coach Marvin Menzies:
Several sources have confirmed to ABC-7 that Texas Tech has expressed an interest in New Mexico State University's Marvin Menzies.
That interest includes Menzies being on the Texas Tech campus today. ABC-7 has reached out to both universities for confirmation.
NMSU's Athletic Director McKinley Boston told ABC-7 he has not given permission to Texas Tech to speak to Menzies.
ABC-7 has learned that permission is not a requirement. Texas Tech has not denied their interest in Menzies.
Menzies has has taken New Mexico St. to the NCAA Tournament in two of the five years he has coached the Aggies and has an overall record of 102-68. Prior to becoming the head coach at NMSU, he was a top assistant at Louisville.
UPDATED: The Las Cruces Sun-News has an update from Menzies himself:
"Right now I have a great situation and no interest in pursuing the job at Texas Tech," said Menzies, who led New Mexico State to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance in his sixth year at the school.
Menzies said he met with Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance on Tuesday.
"I have a relationship with him and he wanted to pick my brain about the job and current candidates, but I didn't take a campus tour, nor was I flown in on a private jet out of El Paso as was reported by an El Paso TV station," Menzies said. "I will be back (to Las Cruces) in the morning."
So maybe this story is done.
