The Lady Raiders are looking for their second season sweep of a Big12 opponent when they go up against TCU tonight. Tech defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers in both games played this season, first in Morgantown in January and then in Lubbock this week. The Lady Raiders defeated the Mountaineers on Wednesday night 76-63. Tech for the most part dominated the game against WV with the exception of the first few minutes of the game. The Mountaineers used their pressure defense all night but Tech pushed through and used a 20-8 run to take the lead at the half 29-17 and never looked back. The Lady Raiders held the Mountaineers to an 18.4% FG%. The win places Texas Tech in a tie for the 3rd spot in the Big12 standings with Iowa State
The Lady Raiders (17-6, 7-4) are on a 2 game road trip. The first game is against the TCU Horned Frogs (7-14, 0-10) tonight at 7pm CST in Fort Worth at the Daniel Meyer Coliseum. Tech needs to play like they have all season, as a very cohesive team. This game can not be overlooked and they cannot be caught looking ahead to the game on Tuesday against Baylor in Waco. Tech needs to come out aggressive in each of their games. They cannot afford to let the opposing teams take the lead and the Lady Raiders need to dictate the game flow and pace and not let their opponents decide
The game today will be the 40th meeting between the Lady Raiders and the Horned Frogs. Tech leads the series 38-1. The Lady Raiders will have to play around TCU's Center Latricia Lovings (6' 3 "). The Junior Center is only behind Baylor's Brittney Griner in Blocks in the Big12 stats. Lovings has 77 Blocks for an average of 3.67 Blocks per game this season. The Lady Raiders will have to fight and win the rebound battles and they need to continue to attack the basket and the boards. The Lady Raiders have been strong at the free-throw line this season with a 69.7% FT% and in some games as high as 87% FT %. They are also a very much improved at 3-Pointers with a 33.1% completion but since conference play closer to 45% completions.
The TCU Horned Frogs have not won a Big12 conference game and so they will be fighting hard to get that first win. The players to watch on the TCU team are Freshman Guard Zahna Medley who averages 12.9 points and 4.0 rebounds for the week. She has also hit the 20-point mark four times this season, which is the most of any freshman in the Big 12. Medley is the only rookie in the Big 12 to rank in the top 10 in scoring and assists. The TCU Center Junior Latricia Lovings is rebounding and blocking machine. Lovings averages 9.9 rebounds per game and as noted above averages 3.67 Blocks/game. Lovings, who is also No. 4 in blocked shots overall in the NCAA..
The lady Raiders lead the Big 12 Conference in total steals with 247 in 23 games (10.74 per game). The Lady Raiders lead the Big 12 and are #26 in the Nation with a +5.09 turnover margin. Coach Kristy Curry is in her 7th season and her current record at Texas Tech is 126-93.
The Horned Frogs' Head Coach, Jeff Mitie is in his 14th season with TCU. His career record is 427-199 and at TCU 283-154. He has guided TCU to 11 postseason appearances in 12 years (nine NCAA Tournament berths)
