This game follows the Red Raider NSD Review in Lubbock so hopefully the USA will be full and rocking. The game is also the Play4Kay game so wear your pink to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The Lady Raiders (16-6, 6-4) play the West Virginia Mountaineers (13-8, 5-5) tonight in Lubbock at the USA at 7pm CST (8pm EST). The Lady Raiders are coming off a dismal week of two losses -- first a loss to Baylor, then a loss in Ames, IA against the Iowa State Cyclones. Tech played its worst half game this season in the 2nd half on Saturday. Tech controlled the boards and played the Cyclones aggressively in the 1st half and went into the locker room leading 29-25. The Lady Raiders should have had the momentum to pull out the win in Ames but they just fell apart. The FG% at one point was only 10%. You will never win games or even come close when you have a FG% below 30%. The Lady Raiders could not get the shots to fall and they were not as aggressive and the defense lacked in this game. Down the stretch we nailed a couple of 3-Ptrs but the game was already out of reach. The final score was Tech 52 Iowa State 67. The loss puts Texas Tech in a tie with the Cyclones for the 3rd place spot in the Big12 Standings.
Tech has only played the Mountaineers once and that game was in Morgantown, WV in January. The game went into overtime and Tech pulled out the win 77-73. The Mountaineers are coming into this game with some momentum. They have won their last two games against #19 Oklahoma State and #21 Oklahoma. The Lady Raiders will need to come out and play aggressive the whole entire game. They will need to focus and make their field-goal attempts count. The whole flow of this team was off in the game against Iowa State and I am hoping they get it back and keep it as they continue to battle in the Big12 games. On a positive note, the Lady Raiders are keeping their FT% high and when they do get a look at a 3-Ptr they are taking it and in most cases it is working for them. To win tonight they are need to play together and work off each other and make the plays happen.
The Mountaineers will have the height advantage and are strong on defense. WV is struggling with their free-throws this season at 65.5%. Junior Guard Christal Caldwell has led the Mountaineers in scoring in the last two games with 20 points and is currently the season's scoring leader with 12.9 points/ game. Fellow guard Taylor Palmer averages 11.4 points/game. Senior Center Ayana Dunning scores an average of 8.9 points/game.
Texas Tech leads the Big 12 Conference in total steals with 241 in 22 games (10.95 per game). The Lady Raiders lead the Big 12 and are #21 in the Nation with a +5.41 turnover. Coach Kristy Curry is in her 7th season and her current record at Texas Tech is 125-93.
The Moutaineers Head Coach, Mike Carey is in his 12th season with West Virginia. Carey's current record with WV is 240-135. His achievements speak volumes: a school-record 29 wins in 2009-10; the highest national rankings in program history; the most BIG EAST wins in school history; seven 21-win seasons in nine years (a school record); six consecutive postseason appearances (a school record); 21 career victories over ranked opponents, including the highest-ranked team in school history and the highest ranked road team in school history; victories over two eventual national runner-ups; two BIG EAST championship game appearances; consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (2007, 2008 and 2010, 2011, 2012) and six trips in nine years (2004, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012).
