The Lady Raiders (4-3, 0-0) take on the Arizona Wildcats (1-7, 0-0) today at McKale Center in Tuscon, AZ. The game will be played at 1pm CST (12 noon MT) and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. Surprisingly, this game is only the 2nd time the Lady Raiders and the Wildcats have played with Tech winning 98-65 in Dec 1979.
The Lady Wildcats have struggled in their non-Conference games but had two games go into overtime. Arizona returns three starters and three seniors. Forward Erica Barnes is a strong free-throw shooter at 87.5% and is strong from the field and accurate with her shots, Guard Carissa Crutchfield is a strong 3-pt shooter and Kama Griffitts is six foot tall and so has a height advantage and she is a well rounded player that can take shots from the field as well as 3-ptrs and rebounds aggressively. The Wildcats have a redshirt junior guard Candice Warthen that is their star player. Warthen is a 5-5 guard but she is a fast and powerful player that brings the energy to this team. She averages over 14 points a game. The Wildcats are a very athletic team and will have a height advantage over Tech with two of their starters being six foot or taller and four Bench players being 6-1'.
The Lady Raiders are coming off a tight win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff over two weeks ago and this will be the first true road game as the other were at neutral sites. The Lady Raiders are starting to gel as a working team with their leader being Amber Battle that has double-doubled in every game. Battle averages over 17ppg and over 10rpg.
The strengths for this Lady Raiders team are in their scoring, blocked shots, steals and they do not commit fouls. Tech scores an average of 70 points per game and they are 7th in the country in FT% at 78.9%. Tech is in the top third of the country in blocked-shots averaging almost 4 per game and they have 47 steals in the first 5-weeks of play averaging almost 7 steals per game. The Lady Raiders have struggled in allowing Turnovers. They are averaging 19 TOs per game. The Lady Raiders need to improve on their 3-Point shots with an average of 31.3%.
The Arizona Wildcats Head Coach, Niya Butts, begins his 6th season. She was brought in to the program in 2008 to revitalize the program that faltered. She has been an assistant coach at both Kentucky and Tennessee and has improved the team in wins alone each season. Butts' record is 75-90 The Starting Lineups:
