Soccer update for 11-12-2013

Texas Tech Soccer came up short in the Big 12 Tourney after a loss to OSU 0-1 in the semifinals. This was only the second loss for soccer for the season. I watched the entire soccer match on the Big 12 Digital Network. TTU came out flat during the first half with a back and forth against OSU over the entire length of the field. The ladies did come out in the last eight minutes of the match and had 8-1 shots on goal in that short span. Had they played the entire match as the last eight minutes, I believe they would have advanced to the finals. Below will be the TTU/OSU game review. Three Red Raiders made the Big 12 All Tournament team and include: Soph. Forward Janine Beckie, Jr. Defender Jaelene Hinkle and Jr. Mid Fielder Paige Strahan.

TTU Soccer punched their NCAA card yesterday as they will now compete for the second consecutive year in the tournament. TTU Soccer also is the host for the first round of the tournament and will face off against the Minnesota Gophers who are 11-7-2 on the year and a conference record of 4-6-2 on Friday at 7 pm at John Walker Soccer Complex. The only common opponent that both teams have played is ISU. The Gophers beat them 1-0 while the Red Raiders beat them 2-1. This is an intriguing match up as the Gophers record is not that great coming out of the Big 10 but do not let that fool you. The Gophers play strong and also have a great GK in Fr. Tarah Hobbs. Hobbs was named the 2013 Big 10 GK of the year. Coach Golan will have the Gophers ready to play in a road match. See what Coach Golan has to say about the Gophers trip to John Walker.

Coach Stone is excited to host the first round for the second year in a row. Home field advantage will pay dividends for the Red Raiders. TTU has only allowed 7 goals on the season and posted 16 shutouts. The players that will need to set the pace for this game will be Soph Janine Beckie who works the ball around and gets off good shots on the goal. Jr. Mid Fielder Paige Strahan does an excellent job of feeding the ball to the forwards and has a great chemistry with Beckie. I also expect a great defensive line to step up and keep transitioning the ball back to our side of the field. GK Victoria Esson will also play a key role in the game by not allowing any balls to get by her. OSU did score on her as a ball got loose on the ground and OSU was able to capitalize on that mistake. Rest assured that Coach Stone will have them ready to play and win on Friday. This match very well may come to a draw and be decided in OT. I am excited to see how they rebound from their loss.

Bracket and Rankings

Lots of interesting selections coming on our side of the NCAA Bracket. I do not like to look past this game but if (when) TTU wins, they will face the winner of the Texas A&M vs Utah match. I would tend toward A&M to win this match. This match will also be played on Friday at 6 pm in College Station. Please review the bracket to see others that are on our side initially. WVU and OSU are playing in the same bracket but wouldn't face each other until the Semi Finals of the tournament if they were to both win out.

Top Drawer Soccer has ranked TTU at #18 this week down from #7. College Sports Madness has ranked TTU #11 down from #4. NSCAA has ranked TTU at #18 down from #11 in their poll. These are the final season rankings for the polls. The next polls out will include tournament play.

Highlights from the TTU V OSU can be seen on Texas Tech TV. Coach Stone speaks about NCAA tournament in his news conference by Texas Tech TV. (nine minutes long).

Even though TTU did not advance in the Big 12 tournament, do not count them out. I still believe they will get through several rounds of the NCAA tournament.

Keep watching here and on other GDT's for updates for TTU Soccer.
