Texas Tech Morning Links | Volleyball to Play Tonight; Changes to Special Teams & Mayfield in Full Pads

Morning links on the volleyball team set to host Kansas tonight. The tip-off event is announced for the women's basketball team. The men's basketball team receives a commitment. The football team has numerous changes on special teams and QB Baker Mayfield is back in full pads.

Not a lot of time this morning, working on some other things.

  • Volleyball | The volleyball team will host Kansas on Wednesday (tonight!) starting at 6:00 pm and this be their annual pink match.
  • Women's Basketball | The Lady Raiders will hold a tip-off event this Sunday at 3:00 pm at the USA.
  • Soccer | We've got one of VTM's own, 85raider, keeping you up to date on the soccer team with a FanPost, so go check it out.
  • Men's Basketball | The Big 12 Men's Media Day is set for October 22nd.  Tubby Smith also received another commitment yesterday, PG Keenan Evans, from Berkner. More on Evans later today.
  • Football
    • The LAJ has a bit on OLB Austin Stewart, who I guess had some grade problems last year and said that Tuberville forced him to not practice for an entire month so he could focus on his grades. Co-DC Mike Smith said that Stewart is improving steadily:
"Austin is improving every week," said co-defensive coordinator Mike Smith, Stewart’s position coach. "He’s one of our top guys on defense. Kid’s smart. He’s athletic. He’s big. Every week, you see he’s making plays and plays and plays. I just love his attitude and his mentality. He loves the game. A kid like that, that strives every week to get better, is going to get better. So I couldn’t be happier with the way Austin’s playing."
Good quotes from Stewart, who was figuring it out last year to say the least and how he's thankful to be here now. Go check it out.
    • The LAJ also has a notebook with Sadale Foster commenting that he has been replaced as the punt returner and that S & ST coach Trey Haverty is looking for changes:
"Quite a bit (of changes)," Haverty said. "I would probably say more than half. Not necessarily guys (replaced), but guys moving positions, and then we’ve got a couple of guys back that weren’t there Saturday. There’s definitely some changes done. We can’t just let the status quo be a kickoff return (touchdown), so we’ve got to do our part to get it fixed."
I can pretty much guarantee that this will be fixed on Saturday.

Also of note is that QB Baker Mayfield was back in full pads yesterday, the first time since he was injured in Kansas.
    • CBS Sports named TE Jace Amaro to their mid-season All-American team. ESPN named the tight end from Florida St., Nick O'Leary, who is also really good. FSSW named their All-Big 12 Mid-season team with Amaro, LT Le'Raven Clark and DT Kerry Hyder.
    • Here are a ton of WVU links because I think that HC Dana Holgorsen held his weekly press conference: Post-Gazette on the coaches' friendship, EerSports with quotes from the players, the DailyMail with the video from the presser, the MetroNews on the revenge factor, the DailyAnthenaeum on communication improving with WVU, and the DailyMail with an injury report.
    • FootballOutsiders has their F+ Rankings and according to the stats, Texas Tech has the 27th best team. This seems more right that 16 or 15, but what do I know. Also of note is that the offense is ranked 21st, the defense is ranked 28th and the special teams is 84th. I am a little surprised by that last ranking.
