The Lady Raiders (13-4, 3-2) take on the #23/21 Kansas Jayhawks (11-4,2-2) tonight in Lubbock at the USA at 7pm CST. The Lady Raiders beat the Longhorns in Austin, TX on Wednesday. Jan 16th. The win was the first time under Coach Curry that the Lady Raiders have beat UT in "The Drum" (Erwin Center). This game will be the 20th time Tech and Kansas have played. Tech leads the series 14-5.
The Lady Raiders rebounded from their loss in Norman last Saturday night and beat the Texas Longhorns in Austin, TX on Wednesday night. For the first time this season they came out and played aggressive and took a 14 point lead over the Longhorns. The Lady Raiders might not have been as tall as the Texas players, but they out maneuvered them, outpaced them and outshot them. The Lady Raiders will go very far this season if they can just continue to play like they did on Wednesday night. The Longhorns rallied at the end of the game but Tech answered back and won 66-59. The win places Tech back in the 4th place spot in the Big12 standings. The Lady Raiders continue to do well at the Free-throw line and have improved on their 3-Point shots. Going into Wednesday's game against Texas, the Longhorns were the best in the Big12 in offensive rebounding, but Tech shut them down. The Lady Raiders out rebounded Texas 31-30 overall, including 14-8 in offensive boards Wednesday night. It was the first time Texas had been held to 30 or less rebounds this season.
The Lady Raiders will have to play a very similar game tonight if they are to beat Kansas. The Jayhawks will have the height advantage and are strong on offensive rebounds and at the free-throw line. The Lady Raiders will have to play a tightly controlled game and play their best defense if they are to beat the Jayhawks. Tech will have to come out aggressive and stay ahead of the Jayhawks.
The Kansas Jayhawks are coming off two losses. They were picked to finish 4th in the 2012-13 Big12 Women's Basketball Preseason Poll but they are currently in 7th place. They lost to Oklahoma State in Stillwater a week ago and lost to Baylor on Wednesday. The Jayhawks have struggled in their last five games squeaking out a win over West Virginia 2 weeks ago. The Jayhawks are lead by Senior Guard Angel Goodrich and Senior Forward Carolyn Davis. Goodrich averages 13.9 points/game and makes over 75% of her Free-throw shots and averages 3.2 Steals/game. Davis averages 15.3 PPG and averages 5.4 rebounds /game. Four out of five of the starters make over 70% of their free-throw attempts.
Texas Tech leads the Big 12 Conference in total steals with 205 in 17 games (12.06 per game). The Lady Raiders lead the Big 12 and are #12 in the Nation with a +6.53 turnover. The Lady Raiders have dominated their opponents by outscoring them an average of 14.1pts per game. Tech's FT% is currently 67.6%. Coach Kristy Curry is in her 7th season and her current record at Texas Tech is 122-91 and is only 5-2 against Kansas.
The Jayhwaks' Head Coach, Bonnie Henrickson is in her 9th season with Kansas. Her career record is 307-187 and at Kansas 149-125. During Henrickson's time at Kansas, she has taken the Jayhawks to postseason play in 6 of her 8 seasons. Last year the Jayhawks made it to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
