This has been a long-time coming for what was a tall lanky linebacker at 6-3/215 when he initially committed to Texas Tech, twice previously. In 2010, Hartsfield committed after high school, but didn't qualify and spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy. Then, in 2011, he re-committed after his year at Hargrave, but again, he didn't have the grades and attended Copiah-Lincoln C.C. Now, after spending last year at Copiah-Lincoln, Hartsfield will hopefully become part of the 2013 class. The first two video clips are old, from high school, but the third clip are highlights from Copiah-Lincoln's 2011 season. I've embedded the video after the jump.
That is perseverance and I applaud Hartsfield for sticking with it. College athletics is littered with players that just give up after prep school or JUCO, but Hartsfield stuck with it. I also have to applaud Texas Tech, and probably Robert Prunty, who told him that if he continues his path, he'll make sure and have a scholarship available.
Now, Hartsfield is a 6-3/245 defensive end and he's grown into the player that a lot of people thought he would be coming out of high school. It's strange in that Hartsfield talent ranges from a 4-star player with Rivals to a 2-star player with Scout. I've left the rankings as not rated (N/R) for now as most of the rankings are based off of his high school or prep school career.
Last year for Copiah-Lincoln, Hartsfield had 67 tackles and 8 sacks in just 9 games. That garnered Hartsfield MACJC All State honors. We'll get to his teammate, Jerrell Jordan later, but they are the bookend defensive ends for Copiah-Lincoln and had 105 tackles together and 12.5 sacks.
More after the jump.
The Player Speaks
Nothing just yet.
Based on what Hartsfield was and what he's grown to be, he's actually more mature than his teammates, although he was a freshman last year. Having a year at Hargrave had to help and is probably one of the reasons why he did so well as a freshman at Copiah-Lincoln. I did find highlights of the 2011 season for the Wolfpack and Hartsfield is #30. You can see that he is no longer lanky or small. He's a good sized defensive end, he gets nice push, stays in his lane. You can see some sacks around the 4 minute mark and please sign me up for #2, that kid can pick off some passes.
