Texas St., Texas Tech |
The first thing that comes up when you search for Caleb Woodward is a furniture maker in the greater D.C. area. It's really fantastic furniture and if you end up buying anything, tell Caleb that DTN sent you.
But next on the list is Caleb Woodward, an athlete from Leander, that is Texas Tech's 13th commitment. Just like some of the more recent commits, this is a situation where Woodward hasn't been evaluated by any of the recruiting services and doesn't have a profile for two of the four recruiting services. I think that Woodward has been on the radar for quite some time and the coaching staff offered last week and Woodward probably couldn't wait to commit, but was most likely told to sleep on his decision.
Stats
According to MaxPreps, Woodward was good, but not great last year. I'll get to this later, but apparently Woodward was a do-it-all sort of player for Leander last year in that he played Wildcat quarterback and played defense as well, but Leander also had a quarterback that played a majority of the snaps. I don't think all of the games were reported, but Woodward was 7 of 9 for 170 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and ran 54 times for 259 yards and 6 touchdowns. This is very similar to Texas Tech recruiting Keenan Ward, Dominique Wheeler and Reginald Davis. The difference is that Woodward will be playing 4A competition, while those others didn't play above 3A competition.
The Player Speaks
I'm sure some stuff will be published a bit later, but for now I found some articles on Woodward and how he looked during the spring game. This from the Cedar Park Leander Statesman (I should also note that Woodward was the offensive machine during his spring game, but he also had 2 interceptions):
Caleb Woodward saw action last season and enters the spring as the man behind center for the Lions. He led the offense on a scoring drive in the team’s first Thursday scrimmage and scored the capping touchdown on a run. If he continues to grow, and the defense does what it’s projected to do (see feature, page B4), Leander may just crash its Class 4A welcoming party this fall. We’ve got athletes," Leander coach Clint Harper said of his offense, "we’re just trying to find different ways to get them the ball."
And this from the HillCountry News:
"We’re going to be explosive," said Woodward. I feel good about our offense, because we haven’t really had a scrambler in the past, and I feel like our offensive line and our receivers are adjusting well," said Woodward.
More after the jump.
Scouting Report
So the only video I could find was from High School Cube and even then, the video is grainy and not very good. So you could watch entire games if you want. I'd also add that Woodward has one highlight available, so you don't have to watch entire games. I cannot imagine that I'm going to give an accurate scouting report based off of one play, but in that one play, you saw Woodward have some nice speed, good vision and the ability to out-run defenders. You can also check out Woodward's 200m (23.47) and 400m (50.80) times at Athletic.net, which I think are pretty good, although the 400m time seems like his best event. There you go.
Caleb, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2013 Class
Things are shaping up. Most likely only about 7 or 8 spots will be available.
