WBB: Lady Raiders play the #1 Baylor Bears Sat., Feb 18, 2012

The Lady Red Raiders play the #1 Baylor Bears in Waco on Saturday Feb 18, 2012 at 7pm CST at the Ferrell Center in Waco. This will be the 74th meeting between these two teams. Tech leads the series 47-26. The two teams split the series last year, each winning at home. Texas Tech is 19-11 in Waco.

Tech enters the game after a loss to Texas in Austin on Wednesday, Feb 15th. The Lady Raiders have been up and down on their wins and losses starting with a win over UT in Lubbock on Jan 28th. Tech has won a game then lost the next since that game. Baylor is undefeated and beat Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Feb 15th in Stillwater, OK.

What's at Stake: Tech is trying to be one of the top 6 six teams in the Big 12 to get a first-round bye in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Championship. Currently they are tied for 7th with Oklahoma State and Texas in the Big 12 standings. Secondly, every victory is needed if Tech is to get into the NCAA Tournament. The Baylor Bears will be looking to stay undefeated and to improve their record in the series with Texas Tech.

Comments: Tech has beaten this Baylor team before. They did it last year when the Bears were also ranked #1. If Tech follows the pattern of win a game, then lose a game then this is their night to win. .The Lady Raiders lost to Baylor by 8 points in Lubbock on Jan 18th, which is the tightest score Baylor has had all season with the exception of the UCONN game which ended 66-61 in Baylor's favor. With only 5 more games on the schedule before the Big 12 Tournament, Tech needs this win tonight. With the Longhorns playing Kansas State and then Baylor and the OSU Cowgirls playing the Aggies and then Kansas State, Tech has a chance to tie for the 5th spot in the Big 12 standings with Kansas and Iowa State. Tech would earn the 6th spot over Iowa State based on a better overall record and higher RPI ranking. The odds are not in Tech's favor going into this game. If you look at Baylor they have impressive stats all around, they have more height and they have more seasoned players but the Lady Raiders have heart and a "can do" attitude that cannot be measured. Tech needs to create their own impressive stats and break some records and break Baylor's winning streak. The Lady Raiders need to bounce back hard and strong with this game and set the tone for the rest of the season. Tech edges Baylor in actual 3-Point's made and has made more offensive rebounds and Tech leads the conference in Steals. If the Lady Raiders can play to their strengths and improve on their FG% and especially their FT% then they will win.

One other note: This game is in Waco and it is sold-out. The Ferrell Center will be dressed in the green and gold and the fans will be hostile. I am hoping the Lady Raiders can feed off each other and use the energy to win this game

Head Coach Kristy Curry

On the difference in the game:

"There were two keys on the board to start the game. The first one was transition defense and making sure that our one (point guard) understood they had to stop the ball. It was constantly going north and south and we wanted to make it go east to west. We didn't get the job done transition defense-wise. The second one was rebounding and we obviously go outrebounded. Those are two keys that you have to understand the importance of. We had a really disappointing night at times. Our smalls didn't have their best night. We just didn't do a very good job transition defense."

On what was keeping the team in the game when Tech was up by 7 midway through the 2nd half:

"I thought we had some people step up. [Junior guard] Chynna [Brown] hit some big shots and [Junior guard] Casey [Morris] hit some big shots. It's great to have [Senior forward] Kierra [Mallard] coming back and playing hard. We are playing with a lot of energy and are playing aggressive. I thought we were aggressive through that stretch and were able to finish with some makes. That was the difference down the stretch. (Chassidy) Fussell hit some big shots and we were not able to come down and make some big shots ourselves. We have to credit Texas. They did a good job of making plays down the stretch and we did not."

Junior Guard Casey Morris

On what happened in the last five minutes of the game:

"The game is more mental than physical and we needed to execute in that sense. We had mess-ups that we couldn't afford. I think we beat ourselves tonight, but we will pick back up and stay positive."

On the morale of the team:

"We are staying positive and staying together as a family. This is a part of basketball, having wins and losses. We are trying to keep our heads up and know that our goal is to get where we want to get. That is still a possibility for us and very doable. We want to stay positive and stay together."
