ODDS AND ENDS | Our good friends at the Iowa St. blog, Wide Right & Natty Lite, has a beginners' guide to the Big 12 for TCU and West Virginia fans.
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | What a nice way to start opening day, a combined 1 hitter from Duke von Schamann and Trey Masek, something that hasn't happened in 11 years. Texas Tech beat Missouri St 4-1 yesterday (box score | quotes). von Shamann pitched 7.0 innings, had 6 strikeouts, 1 walk and threw 58 of his 93 pitches for strikes. Masek pitched 2.0 innings, netting the save and 3 strikeouts, no walks and 17 of his 21 pitches went for strikes. Those last numbers, the strikes, is in stark contrast to previous years and that's good news. 3B Reid Redman knocked home CF Barrett Barnes and 2B Jamodrick McGruder in the first inning and freshman SS Tim Proudfoot tripled in the 8th inning, knocking home LF Brennan Moore and C Bo Altobelli.
LAJ's George Watson has a recap of the game:
On a team full of veterans, Spencer said it was nice to see one of the newcomers step up on a crucial situation.
"That was huge," Spencer said. "That’s a big at-bat for him because he had a tough at-bat the one before where he couldn’t move a runner up on a bunt. He did a nice job for his first day. We all remember Kelby (Tomlinson) last year and his first game at shortstop and he was a junior, and he couldn’t hardly stay on his feet for two innings. Proudfoot things this is July 5 where he’s from, 45 and cloud cover."
The next game is today at 4:00 pm against Tennessee Tech.
TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL | Woot! Two wins are better than one win as the softball team notched a win against Ohio St. 7-4 and then beat Long Beach St. 2-0 as they play in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic and they'll play another double-header against Portland St. and Idaho St.
"We played them tough," junior guard Casey Morris said. "Just like Coach Curry keeps repeating, we’ve played them tougher than any other team. Us knowing that just helps our confidence going in there and playing against them. Even in front of their crowd we know we can do it."
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | A bit of house-keeping first. Last week I was asked to pick games by the fine folks at Big 12 Hoops and I got every game correct except for the two Texas Tech games going 9-2 overall. I'm an expert, obviously. The Red Raiders will also play tonight at 7:00 pm and will take on the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, the game is televised on the Big 12 Network (official site). I'd also encourage you to check out Rock Chalk Talk's preview of your Red Raiders. LAJ's Nick Kosmider previews the game and writes that PF Robert Lewandowski goes home Kansas and hopes to get the win. Head coach Billy Gillispie talks a bit about the defense and Lew:
In fact, it had been 25 years since Tech last held back-to-back conference opponents under 50 points, and coach Billy Gillispie said Lewandowski’s play has been a key factor.
"He’s done great and he’s improving," Gillispie said. "Seniors don’t improve, but he continues to improve. The reason he does is because he’s the most conscientious person I’ve ever been around. I’ve never been around someone where all you have to do is tell him to do something and he’s going to try his hardest to do it.
"He’s been great in every aspect for our team, and he’s had to carry so much."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | LAJ's Don Williams has notes from yesterday's scrimmage. I'll just tell you to go read the whole thing as there are too many quick hits for me to mention anything in particular. Feel free to discuss in the comments. LAJ's Williams also has a preview of the special teams and as a quick summary, it appears that K Ryan Bustin will be the kicker, while IR/RB Sadale Foster and IR Javares McRoy will work in at punt return, while RB Ben McRoy will work in at kick returner, but is splitting his time with track. WR Bradley Marquez is most likely in the mix as a returner as well.
There is no practice today, but picks back up on Sunday, as I think Texas Tech is holding another junior day and the only reason I know this is from this ESPN article about how 2013 prospect TE Christian Morgan is visiting today.
