Grading Texas Tech's win against Nebraska-Omaha along with some quotes and links on the game.

UNO 63, Texas Tech 91 | Boxscore | Quotes

I finally got to watch this team and this is really a different team than last year. This team has some shot-makers and play-makers and that's the biggest difference in this team last year. The offense mainly revolves around driving and creating or a pick and roll at the three point line and allowing the ball-handler to create. Yes, UNO is a lower level team, but this team looks better and has a ton of options at the guard spot and it's much different than last year. Now, we'll have to see if the team can hold up over the course of a Big 12 season.

QUOTES

Head Coach Chris Walker:

"I thought it was a great effort overall by our guys. It was nice to see that after we started off great in the first two games that we played in the first half and this time we started off pretty good and towards the end of the first half we did not so good, so it was good to see in the second half we actually picked it up and in the second half of the last two games we weren’t so good, weren’t so crisp and I know sometimes it looks a little ragged and like the other team is scoring but as I tell the guys, our style is to wear the opponent down. We wear them down, we have more bodies, I have more confidence in everyone of my guys to get in the game and play and to take whatever shot, I think that if they can make it they should take it and the bottom line is we prey on guys that think there is a weak link among our guys. As long they play hard and together and stay together on the court no matter what the adversity is. If they make the shot, if not keep pushing it, keep going at them every single possession. I think that if we do that it gives us a chance to win no matter who comes in."

BACKCOURT

SG Trency Jackson has crazy eyes. Remember when you used to date and you'd meet a girl with crazy eyes and the crazier the eyes, the crazier the girl ended up being? Jackson has crazy eyes and he's going to be maddening and totally awesome for the next three years. Jackson finished with 8 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and only 1 turnover for the game on 9 shots. The best guard was PG Josh Gray who had 15 points, 4 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 turnover for the night. Gray's outside shot was on target last nght as he hit 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. TG Jamal Williams had a quiet night. I'd also add that Dusty Hannahs is not Brady Heslip-light. Hannahs can get up a shot coming off a screen or on his own with a man in his face. He doesn't need a clean look. He can shoot. PG Daylen Robinson is also very active and really enjoy watching him play. He can fill in or play well enough to start. Toddrick Gotcher, Luke Adams and Ty Nurse didn't get a ton of minutes.

FRONTCOURT

SF Jaye Crockett broke out of his slump and was on fire and had a double-double. He finished 9 of 12 from the floor with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists. He was incredibly active and looked terrific. C Dejan Kravic was quiet the first half and I couldn't figure out why. He was 4 inches taller than anyone on the floor. He was then opened things up and had 20 points on 9 of 11 with 6 rebounds. Kravic's offensive game is not back-to-the-basket and he seemed like he was trying to do too much. I'm really interested to see what he does in Big 12 play as I think he'll struggle at times, but he's a nice offensive option. PF Jordan Tolbert was quiet, had 6 points and 6 boards, but after the game, Walker said he wasn't feeling well.

COACHING

A very solid game. The press looks effective, although there are too many easy buckets in transition. I am sure this is something that Walker is trying to figure out how to stop because it will kill this team later. It's on the to-do list. The team had 21 offensive rebounds, out-rebounded UNO by 19 and only had 8 turnovers while forcing 17 turnovers. I think it would really benefit Walker to play Kader Tapsoba during these non-conference games. He's going to be needed in Big 12 play and he probably needs more than 5 minutes a game. Walker does substitute frequently, but he is very much wanting to keep players fresh and it works for the most part.
