No sleeps. Profile on Texas Tech's newest commit (tell me when you've heard this before) CB La'Darius Newbold from Lancaster, TX, later this morning.

This hasn't been reported by the Texas Tech official site, but apparently Texas State made it official.
2012 College Football Recruiting - Top 150 - ESPNU 150 - ESPN

Part II: Big 12 players with the most to prove - Big 12 Blog - ESPN
Ubben says that WR Alexander Torres is a player with something to prove this year, and I'd agree. Torres needs to get back to what he did in his freshman year:
Torres had a huge freshman year (67 catches, 806 yards, 6 TD), but injuries kept him from getting going at the same rate as a sophomore in 2011, when he finished with just 39 catches for 481 yards and three scores. The Red Raiders top two receivers are gone now, though, and they'll be breaking in a new quarterback, Seth Doege. For Torres, now is the time. Can he prove he's capable of keeping the Texas Tech offense humming at the same rate it's done for the past decade and longer?
Texas Recruiting: Big Cigar is Ready to Ash… | Recruitocosm
Recruitcosm notes that the UT coaching staff did offer OL/DL Michael Starts on defense as well as offense. When Starts committed, there was a big to-do about how UT only offered Starts on offense, otherwise Starts would have committed to UT. Big Cigar says that Tuberville pulled out a depth chart of the UT defense and listed the players Starts would have to beat to get a job on defense. It's just one person's opinion, but I thought it was interesting that there are two different stories about what UT did, but I'd guess that the Recruitcosm version is closer to the truth.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
In a players game, hiring a dad to land star recruit is a smart move - NCAA Division I Mens Basketball - CBSSports.com
I mentioned this in yesterday's DTN DD, but it appears that Gillispie has an offer to a high school basketball coach who happens to have a son who is a talented player. The article linked above by Gary Parrish approves of this type of move, and it should be noted that both Texas Tech and TAMU are both filling out their coaching staffs while LSU had their coaching staff since last year.

Congrats to all three players for being drafted! If they chose to go to the MLB, I hope they succeed, if Fowler or Redman come back to Texas Tech, we'll welcome you with open arms. Popescu is the only senior of the bunch, so good luck to Nick!
