Recruiting on the South Plains | DE Leon Mackey

This is the guy.  The guy that can have one hand tied behind his back and still whip your rear (actually, I'm pretty sure that every signee could do this because I am not very strong).  Mackey could be a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball, bookend at a defensive end position and letting someone else fill in until DE Scott Smith returns (fingers crossed).  And Mackey is the type of player that you see on other teams and you say to yourself, "Wow.  That guy looks like a helluva athlete."  Love it and need more.

The Measurables:

So much more good strong after the jump.

The Player Speaks:  Again, another profile and I can't find a news story or any quotes from Mackey.  Sigh.

Video:  The first video appears to be some sort of advertisement for some sort of program that Mackey was with prior to Hargrave.  I'm not sure what to think about it, but I'm posting it because I don't know much about Mackey.

Scouting Report:  Those 30 seconds on the second video goes by way too fast (there's an obvious joke here, but you're all better than that).  Since I haven't see much video I'm guessing that the reason that Mackey was so highly sought-after is because he's good.  Real good.  Scout has this bit on Mackey:

A versatile defensive lineman, Mackey is quick enough to line up at end in Hinds' 4-3 defense in pass rushing situations, and strong enough to line up at tackle during other circumstances. A likely destination will be a strong side end. He's not quite big enough to be a full time defensive tackle, but his size and strength are ideal for an end to hold his ground, and he's quick enough to still be an effective pass rusher - Scott Kennedy

I'd agree with the assessment that Mackey may not be big enough to play tackle, but he's got the right size to play defensive end all day long.

Leon, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
