Recruiting on the South Plains | DT Donte Phillips

Thank the deity of your choice for Texas Tech signing a high school defensive tackle.  The Red Raiders need a few more defensive tackles and we must all hope that Leon Mackey qualifies and Donte Phillips redshirts adds some strength to a solid frame.  Let's get to it.

So much more good-good after the jump.

The Player Speaks: It's amazing.  I looked for 30 minutes and couldn't really find an article or anything about Phillips.  As of right now, I've got nothing.

Scouting Report:  Things I like are Phillips size and speed.  For a guy that's his size, Phillips can really move and for a guy like this to be added on the last day, after possibly receiving an offer from Penn St. (maybe greyshirt maybe a real offer) then I think this is a decent add.  Phillips was originally an Indiana commit and after the coaching change he backed off that commitment, which opened the door for Texas Tech.  Still, I find it strange that a defensive tackle with his size and speed doesn't get a few more offers, but I'm not complaining.

What I don't like is Phillips essentially stands up on every play and simply over-powers the offensive line.  He's got to work on technique, but that's what a redshirt season is for is to get your rear whipped and start to figure things out.  Still, despite maybe not having the best technique, from a prospect standpoint and taking a chance on a kid, this is the kind of defensive tackle prospect that you hope makes it in the program and is able to contribute in a couple of years.

Donte, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
