MEAN GREEN IS GUARD HEAVY | Like a lot of college basketball teams, UNT is guard heavy and that reliance on two talented guards led UNT to the NCAA Tournament and a 24-9 record. Josh White and Tristan Thompson lead the way again, and in North Texas' first game against Henderson St., White had 9 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists, while Thompson had 25 points in just 26 minutes. And off the bench is Dominique Johnson, who scored 21 points. Pretty good. Granted, we're just going off of one game and it was against Henderson St., but still, North Texas is a pretty good team and they have an excellent head coach that's turned things around relatively quickly.
NOT THE BIGGEST TEAM | In these early games where you have an opponent that isn't just incredibly big or deep and I think that's the case with UNT. Perhaps the more accurate statement is that UNT shouldn't be as deep and as talented as Texas Tech and although I maybe shouldn't feel that way, these types of games scare me. Playing on the road against a pretty good team with guards that can get hot and feed off a home crowd. It's happened before and I'll be happy with the clock hits 0:00 after the second half. At this point, all I care about is wins.
THERE'S A BENCH | The starters didn't play all that well on Friday night. Roberson only had 8 points and Singletary had 10. These two are supposed to be the guys leading this team. Brad Reese had 15 points but it took 14 shots to get there. What I did like is the fact that the bench was pretty good. David Tairu led the group with 13 points (I think he should start, but what do I know) on only 4 shots while Jaye Crockett had 8 points, 8 rebounds 5 assists 2 steals and 2 blocks. True freshman Javarez Willis had 4 points and Jamel Outler contributed 9 points in just 9 minutes. In previous years, there was little depth that you could look to that could help this team, and with this year's team, maybe there's going to be a bench that can take some minutes away from the starters if they're not pulling their weight.
REBOUNDING | I will continue to write about this until things change. Texas Tech was out-rebounded by La.-Monroe by 3 boards, 33-36. I've already mentioned Crockett, and I should mention that Reese grabbed 8 rebounds, but Robert Lewandowski must find a way to get more that 2 boards in 19 minutes. That's 1 rebound for every 10 minutes. Wow. If you want to control a team, the frontcourt needs to dominate the glass. I was happy to see that the team only turned the ball over 9 times with 18 assists. That's more than acceptable.
