Congrats to freshman pitcher Louis Head who earned the first win of his Texas Tech career with an 8-4 win over New Mexico (recap). Head (4.0 IP; 2 R; 1 ER; 0 BB; 0 SO) allowed only only one earned run over 4 innings, which in my book is a pretty good start for a freshman, especially on the road. The bullpen was also outstanding: Robert Kilcrease (1.0 IP; 2 H; 0 ER; 0 BB; 2 SO); Brian Cloud (0.2 IP; 2 H; 1 ER; 0 BB; 0 SO); and Chad Bettis (3.1 IP; 4 H; 1 ER; 0 BB; 5 SO) with the save. I'm a little surprised to see Bettis get some mid-week innings, but he needs to pitch and with him pitching early in the week, should allow him to be plenty ready by the weekend. I'm still concerned about the defense, with 3 errors on the day. I keep reminding myself that they're young.
Joey Kenworthy (3-4) scored 3 runs and Michael Reed (4-5; 1 HR; 2 RBI) also scored 3 runs in addition to his great day at the plate. Taylor Ashby (1-4; 3 RBI) got the offense started early, singling in 2 runs in the first inning.
I have no idea who gets the start tonight, although during yesterday's first hour of Tech Talk, Robert Giovenetti said that it might be Colton Farrar.
