Texas Tech Wednesday Morning Notes - Working On Fundamentals Edition

Double-T Nation News:

This is probably going to show my age, but what is hi5. Someone sent me a friend request and I'm guessing that's a social network. I'm not a member of hi5, however, I am a part of Facebook (search for "Double-T Nation") and have even started a DTN group with the thought that once I can make it to a game, we might be able to get together for a few beers prior to kickoff.

Texas Tech Football:

Captain Leach hit the front page of ESPN and Pat Forde's Forde Yard Dash referencing the Captain's dating tips, which as you well know, DTN posted this 12 days ago and Forde is impressed that Leach would answer the question with the manner in which he did:

The fact Leach would field the question is tremendous. That he discussed it with a stone-cold straight face is supernatural, but in character. Leach could open the door to fetch the morning paper, be greeted by a Tyrannosaurus Rex on the front lawn and fail to change facial expression or voice inflection.

DT's Alex Ybarra inquires if Leach & Co. will lose focus as a result of the bye week before conference play. Here's Captain Leach on what the team intends to improve:

"We're working on fundamentals, paying attention to detail, trying to be really sharp on that, and just get good work," Tech coach Mike Leach said. "I think each week you gotta get a week better, whether you're playing anybody or not, you have to get a week better because you only get so many opportunities to improve."

And linebacker Bront Bird likes having Friday off, with a short practice on Saturday:

"I guess there could be (a problem) if a team gets lackadaisical and doesn't take it seriously, but I think this team is pretty mature about things," said Bird, who is third on the team with 21 total tackles. "I don't think that's gonna happen at all. I think we're just gonna look at it as another chance to get better and rest our bodies at the same time."

Bird said he actually prefers to stay busy during the week, admitting that if the team received off on Saturday and Sunday with the usual Monday off, everyone would show up for what would be a "sloppy" Tuesday practice.

"It's smart the way we're handling it and everything like that," he said. "So I think it'll work out for the best."

ESPN's Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin empties out the mailbag, which has some good stuff, but I really enjoyed the look at the attendance numbers thus far in the Big 12, with Texas Tech at 98.6% capacity, which is tied with TAMU for 5th in the Big 12. Granted, TAMU has a few more seats to fill, but it's impressive that Texas Tech has been able to virtually sell out what has been non-name-brand opponents.

LAJ's Don Williams has a little bit more on Yahshua Williams, one of the two new commitments Texas Tech received yesterday.

Did you know that you can listen to the Big 12 Coaches teleconferences? (IE only) I couldn't find Captain Leach, but I also didn't look very hard.
