Texas Tech Baseball Report - 03/23/08

In an attempt to cover baseball a little better, I thought it best to give the baseball team their own weekly report, which essentially includes the update of some statistics and a look back at the week that was, who played well and who did not.

For the week, the team went 2-2, notching a win against Corpus Christi early in the week and losing the series with UT 1-2. If you like moral victories then perhaps you leave the UT series knowing that the last game was close, but it's still a loss.

The Red Raiders went out and demolished a Corpus Christi team only to have the same thing done to them by UT on Thursday. Karns struggled in this Thursday game and I would have to imagine that Fornea's and Large's starts this week could be a prelude to what we might expect should Karns falter again. Ramos and Bettis both pitched okay, but Ramos had 6 walks on Friday and Bettis uncharacteristically had 5 walks on Saturday.

A look at last week's scores:

Date Texas Tech Corpus Christi Result
Tuesday 03/18/08 @ 7:00 p.m. 21 (W: Russ Fornea, 2-2) 8 (L: T. Hernandez, 0-3) Boxscore
Date Texas Tech Texas Result
Thursday 03/20/08 @ 6:05 p.m. 6 (L: Nate Karns, 1-3) 22 (W: Brandon Workman, 3-1) Boxscore
Friday 03/21/08 @ 6:05 p.m. 7 (W: James Leverton, 1-2) 5 (L: Ruffin, 1-2) Boxscore
Saturday 03/22/08 @ 12:00 p.m. 3 (L: Chad Bettis, 3-1) 4 (W: Riley Boening, 1-0) Boxscore

Updated offensive statistics:

Player Avg AB H HR RBI SLG% OB%
Monk Kreder .255 47 12 2 10 .532 .410
Jason Seefeld .333 81 27 2 18 .469 .421
Willie Rueda .339 56 19 0 8 .411 .472
Chris Hall .314 86 27 0 12 .349 .381
Joey Kenworthy .309 81 25 1 11 .420 .457
Doug Thennis .300 80 24 2 15 .500 .446
Tanner Rindels .291 55 16 2 14 .436 .403
Roger Kieschnick .322 81 28 9 30 .759 .427
Taylor Ashby .244 78 19 1 17 .333 .295

Player of the Week: Tanner Rindels. A pretty good week for Rindels as he went 9 for 16 with 9 RBI, 6 of those RBI coming in the UT series when the team only scored 16 runs total. Nice work from Rindels.

Starting pitching statistics:

Player W-L ERA IP H R BB SO
Chad Bettis 3-1 3.69 31.2 29 17 13 21
AJ Ramos 1-2 5.93 27.1 22 20 22 35
Nate Karns 1-3 12.10 19.1 19 26 24 18
Cory Large 1-0 6.55 11.0 12 9 3 7
Russ Fornea 2-2 5.51 16.1 16 11 3 13

Pitcher of the Week: It would be really easy to give this to Bettis again as he pitched well enough to get the win, but I thought it would be nice to highlight the work of James Leverton. For the week Leverton pitched in relief in 3 of this week's 4 games, 2.2 innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 walk and striking out 3. The interesting thing about Leverton is that he's not closing, but he seems to be the first guy out of the pen for Coach Hays (in Texas Tech's win on Friday and in Saturday's loss).
