Positional Reviews and Previews: Special Teams

This is series of positional reviews, which entail a look back and a look forward at each position for the Red Raiders. We'll try and take a look at who is gone, who remains and who we can look forward to playing in the not so distant future.

Season Review and Preview: Special Teams

Who Is Leaving: Alex Trlica, thank you for two bowl wins. Perhaps not the senior year that you would have hoped for, but an excellent career as far as I'm concerned.

Let's take a look at his work:

  • Alex Trlica, #30
Year Games Played FG Att FG Made EP Att EP Att
    2007 13 21 13 67 67
    2006 12 21 15 51 51
    2005 12 18 13 60 60
    2004 12 13 7 55 55

God speed Alex.

Who Returns: We actually have a couple of guys returning, one you know about, and one you probably don't. Jonathan LaCour (the one you know) returns punting the ball for the Red Raiders and considering he was a true freshman, I think he did a pretty good job. I'm looking forward to a less used, but higher yard per punt average from LaCour.

Player Ht/Wt Year Position Games Played No. Punts Yrd Avg Yrd
Jonathan LaCour, #9 6-2/206 So. Punter 12 30 1,229 40.97

Now for the one that you don't know. The only other returning specialist is Brad Namdar, a place kicker from Plano West. I think it's safe to assume that Donnie Carona is going to be the man to beat in the fall, but for now, Namdar is your man.

Brad Namdar, #1 5-8/- RS Fr. Place Kicker 0 - - - -

Who Is Going To Be Here:

Player Ht/Wt Position
Donnie Carona 6-0/210 Place Kicker

After watching Carona's video, I think it's pretty clear that he's going to be good, real good. If things go as planned, Carona will be handling kickoff and field goal duties for the Red Raiders. If Leach determines that Carona just isn't ready for prime time, then it wouldn't surprise me to see Namdar handling field goals for a period of time.

Depth Chart: Keep in mind that any depth chart does include current commitments and there may be additional commitments that could change everything. In other words, we're all just guessing.
