Yesterday was a big day. Of course, I got in 6.5 hours of CLE, but that wasn't the best part of my day. My wife texted me before getting into my CLE that we have moved up to #11 for boys and #18 for girls in our Ethiopian adoption. We were #22 for boys just a couple of weeks ago, so we're moving up fast. And to answer your questions, there are more people that want girls, whereas my wife and I don't care if it's a boy or a girl (not that there's anything wrong with wanting a girl). Then, at 1:57 p.m. my brother-in-law (Red Raider) and his wife (Aggie) welcomed a new baby girl into the world, Emery. Finally, I got an email from a friend who has a ticket to game #3 of tonight's World Series with my name on it. Since most likely I'll miss the tail end of the game, I've got open threads scheduled for 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and consider this your morning open thread.

"I thought we took some bad shots at times, hurried shots, made some really bad passes at times," Tech coach Pat Knight said. "I don’t think it was anything from a defensive pressure standpoint, it was a from a mental standpoint, and that really hurt us because when you get beat by two every little thing’s going to count. Every bad pass, missed layup, quick shot is going to stand out."

The Big 12 Conference has named 28 student-athletes to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Team, the league office announced. Two Texas Tech players have earned high academic honors. Senior Esmir Rizvic was named to the first team and sophomore Mike Singletary earned second team honors. Esmir, the Zenica, Bosnia native, entered Texas Tech after playing two seasons at Gulf Coast Community College where he averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Commodores. He has played in 54 games and has started 20 games as a Red Raider. Esmir, a member of the Bosnian National Team, will graduate in May with his degree in University Studies. He will return home after graduation and is planning to play professionally in Europe. Mike, an Arts and Sciences major, is completing his second season at Texas Tech after graduating from Kingwood High School in Humble, Texas. He has played in 30 games this season and is averaging 11 points per game.

Texas Tech stayed close with No. 3 Oklahoma for most of the game on Saturday, but when the Red Raiders had a chance to take their first lead of the game midway through the second half, they didn’t, and the Sooners closed out a 78-63 victory in front of an announced crowd of 11,574 at United Spirit Arena. "Our margin for error is like this," Tech head coach Pat Knight said, showing a small space between his index finger and thumb. "You’ve got to hit one of those shots to put you over the top. It really gets the crowd into it, and I’ve got to say, I’ve got to thank everyone that showed up - the crowd was incredible. … If you hit one of those, because the crowd was so into it, this place just goes berserk."

Playing against tougher competition, as well as making too many mistakes, has the Red Raiders looking for consistency. "I think we try to force too much," Tech forward Michael Prince said after the Red Raiders’ first conference win of the season against Colorado. "Especially with game management, we haven’t been doing too well with that. That’s a big part of our problem. Coach Pat always tells us to manage the clock, especially when we’re up. The last few games we start ahead and then start turning the ball over or make mistakes and let the other team back in. We’ve got to work on that, for sure."

High-scoring Tigers especially stout at home : Red Raiders This was the only news article this morning so I thought it would be a waste of time to do a whole notes section. DTN preview is on the way later this morning.

"I actually sat down with my dad yesterday because he knows it's frustrating," Knight said on the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday. "And we really talked. It's the kids' mentality. The first thing they want to do is play offense and defense is the hardest thing. He helped real me big." The immediate result was an all-defensive practice Sunday that might not have been a whole lot of fun. Texas Tech has allowed 10 more points in the second half than the opening 20 minutes through the first eight games. "These kids can guard. I know they can do it. It's just getting them to do it at all times," Knight said. "The funny thing is - and you probably never thought you'd hear a Knight say this - I'm really pleased with our zone defense. I'm just not pleased with our man-to-man defense." Knight feels the need to correct the problem soon, given the offensive talent Tech will see in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders have been limited by a rotation shortened by nagging ankle injuries to guard Nick Okorie and forward Michael Prince. For what it's worth, Knight seemed to have no problem volunteering that he sought guidance from his famous father. "The opinion comes from somebody that knows what they're talking about," he said.

Another season is upon us. I’ve managed to see Texas Tech practice a couple of times (earlier when they were going four at a time. Here are a couple observations: * There is little dropoff between the four guards — Alan Voskuil, John Roberson, Nick Okorie and Tyree Graham. I think you can pick any two of them to put on the floor and the production wouldn’t drop significantly. * Get to know the name: Darko Cohadarevic (pronounced CHO-ha-DAR-eh-vitch). He’s listed at 6-foot-9, and much like many of the big men the Red Raiders recruit, he can shoot from the outside. His best trait, though, is his personality. Meaning, he has one. I have a feeling fans — and the coaches — are going to like the way he plays.
