Goodbye Delvon Simmons

I'm confident our collective hero Seth will have some breakdown and analysis of what this does to the depth chart, but for now Texas Tech loses one of its big men. And one of the biggest recruiting challenges in Lubbock as the 3rd (or 4th if you count Oklahoma/LSU as Texas vultures) premier school in Texas, is getting the big boys to come to the West Texas. Michael Starts never saw the field, nor did JJ Lollar and now one has the legitimate fear of losing Delvon's high school teammate Branden Jackson who looked to play an even bigger role.

The 3-4 is a scheme designed to stop the run with size. Until Texas Tech has someone capable of playing a Nose tackle and Ends that would otherwise be defensive tackles, this team will get obliterated in the trenches and allow opposing runningbacks to run wild. This is grim news. I haven't the slightest clue who replaces Delvon at his position or his dimensions. It might be more prudent to lean towards a 4-3 as the roster fits it better.

Spring Game Review - Webb's First Play

A few weeks ago, Seth took a look at the first play of the Spring Game. Today, I'd like to take a look at another first, that of Davis Webb's first time taking the snap. It was a planned RB dump-off going towards the wide side of the field. The WR's are setting up blocks on their defenders to provide some space for Quinton White to pick up some yardage.

With LB Blake Dees coming in from the middle of the field, the result of the play is a loss of 1 yard as White tries to go wide around the block of IR Jordan Davis.

What I want to take a good look at here is the play of the offensive line, specifically the interaction between the center and right guard.

Knowing it's going to be a short pass to the RB, they do a poor job of taking the tackle (#98 Anthony Smith) out of the play. Smith is lined up over the right guard and rushes straight up the field, so he's going to be the guard's responsibility once the ball is snapped. After Morales (C #51) snaps the ball, he also engages Smith, seemingly pushing him towards the ball carrier.

In this photo you can see the two big uglies both engaged with the tackle.

Ideally, the guard should let Smith's forward momentum take him further up the field, accomplishing two things. First, it would take him toward the backfield and away from White, while also releasing some space for Morales to clear over and provide a block on Dees.

That should have opened up more of the field for White to look against the grain, instead of relying on the IR to get him a couple yards.

What's up Raider Nation!

The office ended last night, a sad moment for me. I remember when it first got started with Jim pulling pranks on Dwight, falling in love and stealing Pam, working his way up to Co-Manager and eventually starting Athlead (weather he stays in Scranton or not, I won't tell for those who haven't watched it yet that might be planning too). Also his good looks too..... but I don't go that way. I hope to find my Pam someday.

Anyway Here are some updates on how the recruiting trail is going

Abu Lamin - DT (Fort Scott CC, Kansas)

Measurables - 6'5", 325 lbs, Defensive Tackle, 92 by 247sports / NR or rivals (none from ESPN)

Damn this boy this huge (insert Yo' Mama joke here). Looks like he was originally from Hope Mills, NC and was recruited as a DT out of there too. His 40 speed was a 4.95, which is really not bad for a Plus sized guy. He uses his explosiveness it get off the line quick and grab the RB or QB. His film (here's another one from HS) really impresses me a lot, which I can't say about everyone. He's seems like the type of guy that will give opposing defenses stains on their pants. Anyway, this guy is ready to blow up on the next level (and maybe UT's head while were at it)

Right now, Arkansas is the favorite (he like the SEC, so that kinda sucks), but he also likes Arizona State and Texas Tech (who recently got in the running)

Silvester Hayes - OLB (South Oak Cliff HS, Dallas, Texas)

Measurables - 6'3", 215 lbs, Weak-Side Defensive End or Outside Linebacker, rated 87 by 247sports / 5.5 by rivals / NR by ESPN (they aren't very good at this are they.....)

Time for a guy from D-Town #representing. I don't have lot of info on this guy from film because I couldn't find any, so that kinda sucks :( . He from from Dallas though, which means that his competition must be pretty good then. I did find though that his 40 time is 4.83, which isn't exactly great if your going to be an OLB in college. It says that he can play two positions, but i don't really see him playing much time at DE only weighing in at 215lbs, might need to bulk up a bit.

Right now, we are in the lead with baylor, who has yet to offer a scholarship to him.

Josh Malin - DE (Steele HS, Schertz, Texas)

Measurables - 6'5", 250 lbs, Strong Side Defensive End, rated 82 by 247sports / 5.5 by rivals / NR by ESPN

This guy has been off the radar as far as recruits go, but DAMN IS THIS BOY BIG. Now I can't find any film for him ethier, but that will change by next year. If the school Steele HS sounds familiar, that's because we already have two recruits from there (Justin Stockton and Deionte Noel) and a coach (Mike Jinks). Maybe that will make a difference in the long run. He said he was going to be the next JJ Watt at Texas Tech, and if he commits to us, I sure hope he does.

Right now, we are in the lead with Baylor and OU, whose junior days he also attended.

Texas Tech Forever

Getting your football "fix" during the offseason is different for every person. For me, it consists of finally polishing off the last two seasons of Friday Night Lights and reading Mike Leach's "Swing Your Sword." Others may be glued to ESPN Classic and NFL Network whenever given the chance. Maybe you're going through withdrawals in a padded room full of Mountain Dew for hours at a time, illuminated by 1080p resolution and the soft glow of the green XBOX 360 icon.

There is no wrong way to fight Football Withdrawal Syndrome, unless you're one of those guys who plays flag football. How dare you be athletic? And disciplined? And capable of running while holding or catching a football? This isn't Thunderdome!

Experiencing the thrill of Coach Taylor's seasons in Dillon, TX reminds me of what it was like to play high school football. Sure, it was only for one year and I was the backup to the backups, but it stuck with me. The feeling you get when you ran out to the band, the camaraderie in the locker room, and a sense of unity and bonding with kids from all walks of life are memories I don't ever want to shake.

Reading Coach Leach's book reminds me of what it was like to be a part of something special: a part of the most exciting offense in college football. We were the ultimate Underdog, but we were also the team in Black. All black.

Let's take some time to reminisce, shall we? This can be a form of therapy, or a form of release as we wait for the SMU game.

I want to go back to one of the best nights of my life: the night I realized that my love for Texas Tech was even bigger than I had originally thought. Let's hit the road down memory lane and head on over to November 1, 2008.

It's the day before THE game. I have some friends coming in from out of town to stay with me after work. We have every intention of getting up early for College GameDay the following morning, so our Friday night should be chill and uneventful.

It wasn't. We didn't make it to GameDay. None of us were truly surprised.

It seemed like the hype would never end.

"I deeply hope we beat their ass today," snarled Bob Knight. Corso picked us.

We were fed nonstop shots of McCoy and Shipley. They could do it all: sing, play guitar, room together, throw footballs to a receiver standing on a moving boat from the shore, be roommates, play pool, and share the same living arrangement. It was super neat!

Since I was fresh out of Tech the previous December, I still resembled a college student. I never saw my season ticket seat that year and found friends in the student section. We sat in the South End Zone.

The game started. The Jones was intense. Our defense was merciless. Our offense gathered momentum and began running away with it. Matthew McConaughey had the gall to walk through the end zone with his horns hooked and was greeted with a rousing din of boos. It was a delightful first half, but I knew better.

I remembered the Tech-UT game from 2006, and odds are, so do you. You remember seeing those kids in the tree by the northeast gate, and then seeing Colt McCoy look like 2011 RG3. It was soul crushing.

Then came the inevitable comeback and the final drive by the boys in burnt orange. Tech took the field. "INTERCEPTION!", I screamed. "Why aren't we kicking a field goal?", I thought. "HOW WAS CRABTREE STILL IN BOUNDS??" turned into silent joy. Just standing there, soaking in the moment. I still felt like it could fall apart at any time. I didn't rush the field. I couldn't talk. I couldn't move. And now, I was worried that rushing the field would cost us the game. I could see them running back that short kickoff all the way to paydirt.

They didn't. 39-33.

Driving home felt like being in real-life Dillon after a big win: horns were honking, flags were flying, and people were waving.

One of my best friends ended up watching the game at Buffalo Wild Wings, but he stopped by my apartment later to celebrate. We had the manliest of celebratory embraces at the end of a game which remains the #1 highlight of my life as a sports fan.

That day has forever changed the way I will feel about Texas Tech.

I want this to be a chance for us to think back on that day, and maybe share some experiences. We are approaching 5 years since our last great season, and I get the feeling a lot of us feel like history could repeat itself soon. I want to get in that mindset, and focus on the euphoria we felt during that time.

Who's Our Secret Rival?

Sure, we've all spent time gnashing our teeth at Texas for a myriad of offenses: nearly running the conference into the ground, their self-serving broadcast interests, etc. And while the Aggies have gone off to play in the bayou backwater, they'll always know a special place of disdain among Raider fans.

The more interesting question, the way I see it, is this: who do you loathe additionally, currently? Oklahoma State for the way we've matched up against them of late? Baylor for their improbable resurgence (and the fact that we seem to battle them for recruits)? TCU for the fact that some of their fans seem to think they'll waltz in the Jones after getting beat in their house last year? Someone else?

Perhaps a worthy discussion while we wait for fall ...

Possible Red Raiders (Part 1)

Here are some possible recruits Texas Tech is looking at the football team.

Andre Ross: DE (Navarro CC - Corsicana, TX)

Measurables: 6'4", 225 lbs, weak side DE, not ranked by 247sports and ESPN

Andre Ross was originally a recruit in the 2011 class, considering TCU, Houston, Baylor and Texas A&M. Even more interesting to me, he was recruited as a WR coming out of high school. According to Rivals, he didn't seem to get an offer from any of the schools, which is maybe why he ended up going to Navarro CC. I looked at his Film a little bit and noticed that he does have power and speed, but seems to have not that many moves to use (bull rush may be his only one). Hopfully if we can snag him in, the "bros" can coach him up to be a good DE.

Right now, its looks like those damn aggies are in the lead for him, with us, TCU, OU and OSU behind them.

KD Cannon: WR (Mount Pleasant HS - Mount Pleasant, TX)

Measurables: 5-11??? , 165 lbs, Wide Out, ranked 96 by 247sports / 84 by ESPN / and 4-stars by Rivals

This kid looks like an explosive firecracker. His size seems to be around 5'11", but every site I've been too has said something different. Kid is from East, Texas and did attend the Texas Tech spring game last month. Patrick Mahomes is currently trying to recruit is kid, along with alumi like Wes Welker. He recently finished 9th in the 4A 100m dash with a 10.66, so he is indeed fast. I have nothing bad so say about this Kid really (see for yourself), he plays fast, big, and feels like I'm playing Madden when I see him play.

Right now, Baylor seems to have the advantage over him, but Tech is not that close behind.

Derrick Dixon: S (Skyline HS - Dallas, TX)

Measurables: 5'8", 185 lbs, Safety, ranked 88 by 247sports / NR by ESPN / and 3-stars by Rivals

He is a little small for his position, sure, but he makes plays when they need to be made. Constantly throughout his f ilm, I saw him grab INTs and FF from opponents and making plays in key situations. He visited on Junior Day along with fellow Skyline members Ty Barret (OL) and Victor Evans (DE), and was impressed with Lubbock and the coaching staff. He is listed as a safety, but I believe if Texas Tech can grab him, he will ultimately be a slot CB.

Right now, we are fighting for lead with Baylor (why are they trying to jack our #style man)

Is the SEC the best conference?

I think it is clear that the SEC has dominated college football recently. My questions is this, Does that make it the best conference all around?

Is the SEC the best all around conference? They seem to have a very weak bottom half of the conference, but the best schools in the SEC seems to be the best schools in college football. Is this a dominance because the SEC is better, or because the top is so much better than the bottom. If we look at the numbers SEC has won more games. In the last 10 years against the big 12 the SEC is 23-15. This is a large difference, but 6 of those loses are form the now SEC team and former big 12 team Texas A&M, so if we get rid of those games it is 17-15 which seems pretty even just a slight favor to the SEC.

Both of these conferences had the same number of teams go to bowls games this year 9. This makes up 90% of the Big 12 and 64% of the SEC. In the big 12 we have seen any team be able to beat any other.

Last year. Kansas St. was about to go to the National Championship, but they are blocked by a Baylor defeat and so late in the year it makes it nearly impossible for them to go.

the year before OK st. is heading to the Championship, but loses to Iowa St. Texas Tech beats OU in norman and doesn't even go to a bowl game.

Can the SEC make a claim that any team could win any given Saturday? sure Alabama can lose to LSU and A Manzeil led Texas A&M, but could they lose to Kentucky, Tennsee, Missouri, or Vanderbilt? I can't see this happening. The top 6 teams went for 30-0 against its bottom eight.Iin the conference Alabama has only lost to A&M, LSU, Auburn, South carolina, and Florida, 3 of those teams ended up going to the National Champion ship in the last 5 years. 3 also ended up having a Heisman winner on the team.

If I am giving my opinion I believe it is clear that the media favors the SEC. They do this for a few reasons. 1 it is the biggest market so if there is an article over the SEC or ACC the SEC article gets more clicks and more revenue. It is also clear that it is the most dominant. I also believe that the Big 12 is deeper than the SEC. facts are facts and the bottom tier of the SEC cannot beat the top, but the big 12 can. I also believe it is less about a conference being better than it is about Alabama being better than every other team unless there is a Heisman winner on it.

There has also been a lack of other conferences getting the chance to compete against the SEC. the last 2 years no other conference got a shot. This is mostly due to the broken BCS system that is now finally getting a playoff system.

If this thing does turn out to be worth a billion dollars a year or anything remotely close to that, how in the world is the Big XII going to compete with that much more money heading east per team? Not only does it piss me off that A&M's move has woken the sleeping giant you could say and has yet to have one drawback, at the same time they will be raking in recruits better than anyone in this state (or close to) and regularly top 5 in the country in that category. I think our day in the foreseeable future of stealing good recruits from Aggie land are done, or halted you could say.

Is A&M on a UT level now from a recruiting standpoint solely because of this move to the SEC and all this other shit going on? I think thats an easy Yes.

Am I the only one that wishes the PAC 16 thing would have happened or happens in the future (or anything similar to major big conference stability)? That is the only way TTU will see that kind of $$ coming our way and conference stability is still looking shaky for the Big XII.

UT's network is F#$%ing us, there will never be a Big XII network because one team has there own G.D network. F Bebee, F UT and F the SEC. I want Tech to be on a top tier level and there will need to be some changes made if that is to happen. The one thing I love is Tech has all the resources to do what A&M is doing from a school standpoint & has been trending upwards for quite some time now. As for the Big XII, Bowlsby better do something to impress and stop sitting back. Teams are locking their media rights up which means stability in some sense (I know the Big XII has there's locked up for a decade or so but what happens if the conference dissolves) and at the same time also means teams from the ACC (Cough cough FSU, Clemson, Miami) aren't coming to the Big XII, that ship has sank. I dont think this looks good folks, one positive aspect that someone brought up on Reddit the other day was Tech is in the top 20 in football revenues and you guys know as well as I that means we should have options.

Sorry for the rant, but I hope the TTU brass are keeping there options open and ears to the ground. I have been a Big XII advocate for a long time now but i'm starting to think maybe we are better suited elsewhere with the right situation happening obviously, which a school as big as ours with support such as ours shouldn't have a problem with.

2 Quarterbacks transfer out

Apparently, according to the Dallas Morning News reporter Mike Graham, Dustin Walton (C-State Pueblo) and Brant Costilla have already, or intend to transfer. This leaves us with Brewer, Webb, Nicholas and some bloke called Austin Barr.

That means, if my memory and my math is right, that our current stable of quarterbacks have forced the transfer of 4 quarterbacks in 2 years. That's as good a sign as any, my football starved brothers and sisters, that our star is on the rise. Truthfully, playing time for Costilla and Walton was going to be sketchy at best, indeed, Nicholas being the clear cut #3 option has seen him get what, 6 passed during public scrimmages? I hope he has the patience to stick around, because the two guys ahead of him are at a different level right now.

What are your opinions on this? I'm not too sure how to link (saw the article on my phone) and Seth will probably post it as part of tomorrow's links.

Stability

As the Texas Tech athletic department starts to gear up for the 2013-14 academic/athletic season, there is one thing that the department yearns for ... Stability. I think we have achieved this with the football program and Kliff. He himself, as well as the staff he has brought in, has a genuine want and desire to see the football program get bigger and better, and they will be here for the long-haul to make sure that happens. Nothing has made me happier than when I watched Coach Wallerstadt on the recent "All Access" video on Texas Tech TV, when he said that he loves Lubbock, and all the coaches love it there, and the players better get used to them because they're all in it for a long time. That is something we haven't had in a few years, and that's knowing and trusting that our football program is in the right hands ... hands that care about us and the state of our program.

For the past month (and really all year) I have thought that about Chris Walker. I thought he would bring a sense of pride and ownership to the program, and I've always felt like he would be the right hire. I thought he would build the basketball program up, and take pride in making it his and getting us where we all wanted to be.

I haven't had that feeling with Tubby, because of his age and the "grinder" job that our program really is. That doesn't mean he won't. And I am huge on giving everyone a chance. He is not a snake oil salesman, and he his honest and handles himself with class. One thing Walker always did was represent the Double-T with class, and I was always proud to call him our coach. I think I will feel that way about Tubby as well. He will represent our wonderful school with class, I just hope he also sticks around to make sure it is built up the way we need it. I want to think he will, and I love to be optimistic.

But stability is huge for our school right now, and that's what I want. I want our next years recruiting classes to play for the same coach their entire college career. I know that will be the case with football, and I want the case with basketball to the be the same.

You could argue that our most successful sports program over the past 20 years has been women's basketball. Marsha Sharp and now Kristy Curry have kept stability in that program. And now we need that for men's basketball and football. No change in D coordinator, no change in men's basketball.

Let's trust Kirby feels the same way, and has us going in the right direction.

**I'm also hoping I'm correct on numbers. The Dallas Morning News reported Tubby Smith as the 16th coach, so I'll trust them (as a major news outlet, I hope I can). Wikipedia (not as trustworthy) had the interim president as the 16th, so if you replace him with Nellis, that makes 16.
