Recruiting on the South Plains | 2013 S Derrick Dixon Commits to Texas Tech

PLAYER: Derrick Dixon

POSITION: Safety
HEIGHT: 5'9"
WEIGHT: 187
FORTY: N/A
HIGH SCHOOL: Skyline (Dallas, TX)
VIDEO: Clip 1
RECRUITING SERVICES: Rivals 5.7 | Scout | ESPN 73 | 24/7 Sports 88
CUMULATIVE RANKING: 0.8587
VTM PROFILE DATE: June 19, 2013

OFFERS | West Virginia, Washington St., Rice, SMU, TCU and Texas Tech

STATS | Dixon's Scout article had this:

As a junior, he pulled down six interceptions and recovered a fumble while on the way to earning 9-5A First Team All-District and Second Team All-State honors. He was also a 2013 Scout.com Dallas All-NFTC selection.

That's about the best I can do on stats.

THE PLAYER SPEAKS | These quotes are actually from a DMN article from earlier this year. I'm guessing that they are probably similar in nature to Dixon's commitment today.

"I really liked the visit to Texas Tech a lot. It was really entertaining because the new coaching staff was great. They were really excited about everything. The coaching staff is the biggest thing that I like about Texas Tech right now. Coach (Kliff) Kingsbury is a really cool guy, and it was great when they offered."

SCOUTING REPORT | This is also language from the Scout article and I think this is pretty darned accurate in terms of Dixon's ability.

Love watching him play. He is not the biggest player on the field, but he is always one of the best football players on it. He is very physical and very well put together, like a tank. He uses his size to his advantage cutting down and flying to ball carriers. Because he is such a passionate and heady player he could fill a number of different roles. He could come up in the box and play some linebacker or flip over and play some fullback as well.

It's strange in that Dixon is listed as verified at 5'9", but he lists himself at 5'11" in his Hudl video. I don't know if that is Dixon posturing, but I really don't care whether he is 5'9" or 5'11". Dixon does have a nose for the ball and he does a terrific job in pursuit. In seeing a guy his size and with his speed on film, Skyline ain't no joke, I'm surprised that Dixon doesn't play cornerback, but maybe his ability to really bear down on people is an attribute that the Skyline coaching staff wanted to keep at safety. I like that and if anything, having a versatile defensive back, a guy that can play cornerback or safety or the nickel is a valuable asset.

Derrick, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

High Ceiling and High Upside Are Ridiculous Terms, But I'm Writing About Them Anyway

So far in this mini-series, we've talked about what I think head coach Kliff Kingsbury's plan it, what is makeup and now we're going to get to what I think the coaching staff is identifying players with a high ceiling and upside.

Patrick Mahomes talks about committing to Texas Tech.

When I think about high upside or high ceiling, I immediately turn to QB commit Patrick Mahomes. Just about every scouting report says the same thing, which is that he is very good, has a lot of physical tools, but is far from a finished product. In other words, the athleticism is there, the measurables are there in that he's 6-3 and already almost 200 pounds. He is the son of a major league player and so he knows the hard work and dedication that it takes to go to the next level. But he is still so far from being a starting Big 12 quarterback. He's got a lot of refinement in his throwing motion, how he scrambles, how he needs to keep his head up looking for receivers, etc.

Mahomes has the potential to be absolutely great if he fills out even more, works on his technique and be an even more dominant player. That may not happen for a couple of years, but if does happen, then it has the opportunity to pay off significantly more than a player that is essentially a complete player right now.

Or, Mahomes could not work out at all in that he doesn't improve his technique, can't focus down the field when pressured, and makes too many mistakes. When a player that might be more on the safe side, you could say that the player might not be able to do as much athletically as Mahomes, but he also might be able to come in and contribute or compete immediately.

The thing is though that Mahomes has only played one year of quarterback. One year.

That's the upside. That's the high ceiling. That's the risk.

You can somewhat go down the list of these commits. WR Ian Sadler focused more on soccer than he did on football until last year. Most likely, football was something to fill the time between soccer, but he actually put some effort into football as a junior and was spectacular in really just one season playing football full time. Not only that, but an ACL tear after his junior year may have led Sadler to go a bit unnoticed by a lot of programs.

L.J. Collier is an athletic freak, who comes from a family that played at college football, including Oklahoma. Collier's biggest isssue, which does affect ratings, is that mentally, he's not where he should be. I don't know exactly what that means, perhaps it is on the field or off the field, but either way, given all of the physical tools, he still has some mental hurdles to get over in order to be the dominant player everyone thinks he'll be.

Jakari Dillard running routes at the Dallas NFTC Camp.

Jakari Dillard is the son of a former Oklahoma defensive tackle, Stacey Dillard. As a junior, Dillard stood 6-4/185. There's no way in Hades that he's close to being done in terms of growth, but Dillard is all-in at Texas Tech and if he grows into where his father played in the NFL, at 6-5/290, then Dillard may be that absolutely rare athlete like Gary Moore that could eventually take over where a guy like TE Jace Amaro will eventually be leaving. Most likely, Dillard has a long ways before he's even close to being a finished project.

This isn't at all to say that I think that every single one of Texas Tech's players are high ceiling players that aren't quite finished prospects. That's the nature of recruiting and being in high school and trying to scout 16 and 17 year old players. Even then, I don't think that this is a coincidence either.

I do think that with a lot of these skill position type of players that it is absolutely intentional to focus on players that have a bit of a ways to go and have the ability to be significant impact players. Let's also not forget the thought that three of the four players listed here are children of players who played in college, MLB or the NFL. I go back to the word makeup, but this is part of the makeup for a player, not just those genetics, but getting to that highest level of competition takes an extra gear. I'm guessing that the coaching staff hopes that's the case.

The scary part is that some of these types of things could absolutely fall on their face, in which case you have a player that doesn't turn out the way that you hoped, but the thought is that, as briefly discussed with Mahomes, is that they grow as a player, physically, mentally, etc. and become such a special player that the recruiting prognosticators got it wrong and that it was worth it to take the chance.

4. Dave Campbell's Picks Texas Tech 8th | The LAJ has just a few details, but ultimately, the good folks at Dave Campbell's to finish 8th in the Big 12.

5. Masek Signs With Cubs | Per the LAJ, congrats to P Trey Masek who has signed with the Chicago Cubs!

6. Slowing Things Down | SB Nation's Bill Connelly has an interesting look at pace of college football in 2012. Speaking of pace, per CBS Sports, Arkansas Bret Bielema wants to implement a rule to slow things down and no-huddle offenses.

7. Hanni Opines on Recruiting Class | Voice of the Red Raider basketball team, Brian Hanni, writes about the four recruits, Randy Onwausar, Alex Foster, Cory Scott and Rob Turner.

8. Baylor Preview and Softest Schedules | SB Nation's Bill Connelly looks at the Baylor Bears. Baylor was also on CBS Sports' list of softest non-conference schedules. West Virginia and Kansas St. also make the list. Don't throw stones here. Texas Tech very well could have been on this list with @ SMU, Stephen F. Austin and Texas St.

9. Texas Tech Crystal Ball | 247 Sports does this thing, Crystal Ball Predictions, where they get the recruiting experts to predict where players will commit and then they take those predictions and tally them up and give a percentage. So, Expert 1 thinks that Player A will commit to TCU but Expert 2 thinks that Player A will commit to Texas Tech, then Texas Tech has a 50% chance of receiving a commit. I don't know what to think about this stuff, but at the very least, it's something to watch if recruiting is your thing.

10. R.A. Dickey Knuckleball GIFS | If you like GIF's and baseball, then this is pretty neat.

11. Being Horrible at Your Job | SB Nation's Jon Bois takes a look at this video and if being horrible at your job is a sport. If you haven't watched this video, it is amazing how horrible at his job that this guy is.

12. Firing the Schwab | Deadspin with an interesting take on the difference between Sports Center when 10 to 20 years ago versus now, which is that information was key and important and vital, where as now, people who are good at conveying information are laid off, like Howie Schwab.

This is not a position that is top-heavy in terms of upper-classmen or so young that there aren’t proven players that can step in and play. The biggest problem that this group has is that they just haven’t been all that great. I think that you can pin some of that on the idea that the guys that aren’t so young are that way because they all played when they were way too young and simply being steam-rolled. For the past two years, it has felt like the linebackers were too young and too small and too inexperienced to really be productive.

The thought was that Smith might be a guy that would be able to make a significant difference last year at middle linebacker, a cautionary tale about the immediate impact of JUCO players. Now, he’s been bested by Eguavoen through the spring. I think that Smith can and will fit in somewhere, but this is actually a pretty tight race in terms of who plays where.

The biggest adjustment for the spring was where players will play and playing in 3-4 that has similarities to a 4-3. I think that both this staff and the prior staff had/have the same vision for Jackson and Robertson, which is that outside player that can stand up and rush the passer.

I think the Raider spot is by far this team’s weakest position in that I don’t know about the depth.

I suppose this is as good of a time as any to state that anything past the two-deep on the positions is a complete and total guess on my part. My projections are based on size more than anything else, i.e., a guy seems like he would be a weakside prospect, so I’ll put him here and this guy seems like a Bandit, so he’ll go there. Truthfully, other than the first two listed, it is a complete guess. Also, pay no attention to the order after the first two at each position. Totally made up on my part and in no particular order.

It’s time to make a significant difference. No more making excuses for players that need to add weight or need more time or need something else. This group has had time to do something positive on the field. You need to see these guys as the leaders in tackles. They need to be the ones that can fight off an offensive lineman and still make a play.

Only seeing one spring game, I think that happened. I think I saw significant improvement, but I really need to see it over the course of the year. This group should be deep enough, maybe the deepest position on the team besides receiver, and strong enough to withstand most, if not all injuries. There are a lot of options here.

A couple of notes about the three walk-ons here. First, Tyler Scalzi is a walk-on from Flower Mound and the only highlights I could find of him are from his senior year and his last wrestling match. He won.

Next is Garrett Carter, who is from Sundown, Texas. I had no idea that a town called Sundown existed. There are only 1,500 or so people that live in Sundown according to Wikipedia. It is almost in New Mexico, but it is actually in Hockley County, not far from the Texas/New Mexico border. In any event, Carter was a running back and outside linebacker for Sundown and you can watch his highlights here where he actually displays some pretty decent athleticism.

Last, but not least is Bobby Esiaba. Esiaba is from Dallastown, Pennsylvania. This is not a codename for Dallas, but a small town in the southeastern portion of Pennsylvania that has about 4,000 or so people there. That’s a long ways from Lubbock and I wish someone would ask him how he ended up in Texas. You can watch his highlights here. Esiaba was probably very much an undersized defensive end in high school, but he’s now listed at 230 rather than the 195 in his film. Again, like Carter, it’s not bad, just maybe suspect competition.

I think it is dumb for me to really write this, but this group just has to be better. I don’t know if it is going to happen as a result of better coaching, although I don’t think that Kaufman did a bad job at all in coaching the linebackers, or maybe a better way to write this is that it is a continuation of the coaching that Kaufman provided in that they have to fill the gaps, shed blockers and make plays.

Really though, it comes down to the last part. The linebackers have to start making plays. Did you know that last year, the linebacker that had the highest tackles for a loss was Blake Dees and he had just 2 tackles for loss last year. I find it perplexing to think that the as a unit, this group only had 8.5 tackles for a loss for the entire year. As an entire linebacking corps. For comparison purposes, Kansas St.’s Arthur Brown had 7 by himself. Only 2 forced fumbles by the linebackers last year (Jackson and Robertson) and only 3 for the entire year (one of which was Doege).

It’s really about making plays and I think this has been a meme for two years running, but it has to start sometime if this group is going to help the defense make a significant stride forward.

Tuesday Morning Links on VTM | Madison Still Committed; Keown to S. Carolina; Hocutt's Hires

1. NCAA Committee of Athletic Directors | So yesterday, NCAA President Mark Emmert spoke to the Wall Street Journal and talked about last week's Sports Illustrated article about how the investigation arm of the NCAA has been neutered a bit because so many investigators have left. He proclaims that he's going to form a council or committee of athletic directors so give input. Thanks to the Bylaw Blog, we find out that this committee already exists and that's the problem with Emmert. He has no idea. I try to be careful what I consume as far as the media, but there are a lot more articles about how Emmert is just not a very good leader and he doesn't know what he has. The other thing that I thought of was if you could deconstruct the NCAA from the ground-up, where would you start?

2. Big 12 Previews | SB Nation's Billy Connelly takes a look at the Kansas St. Wildcats and USA Today's Paul Meyerberg thinks that the Iowa St. Cyclones are the #87 team in the nation.

3. It is June and Texas Tech is Projected to a Bowl | SB Nation's Jason Kirk projects 34 bowl games and Texas Tech is projected to play Northwestern in the Texas Bowl in Houston (again).

4. Nellis Welcomed to Texas Tech | The official official site had a welcome video to Duane Nellis, Texas Tech's new President, as his first day was yesterday.

5. Madison Continues to be Committed | AL.com talks with commit CB Tevin Madison, who still very much likes Texas Tech.

6. Ubben Loathes You | ESPN's David Ubben writes about the player that has plenty to prove, TE Jace Amaro, and he also inquires as to Texas Tech's most important game.

7. Hocutt's Major Hires | DMN's Chuck Carlton writes about athletic director Kirby Hocutt's hires of four coaches in the four major programs. I think we talked about this week, but I don't think Hocutt's underlying theme was hiring alumni, but continuity and stability.

8. Keown Hired by S. Carolina | LAJ's Landon Wright notes that graduate assistant Justin Keown is headed home to S. Carolina for a similar position. Good for Keown. He says that Chris Thomsen greatly influenced him as his mentor and was also obviously influenced by Mike Leach and Neal Brown. That's a lot of good coaches.

ALL YOUR RING ARE BELONG TO US

He made it seem easy. He slipped it on his finger and said "I can kill someone with this ring" Then he put it in his pocket and walked out of the room with three KGB goons following closely behind.

The longtime owner of the Patriots was understandably confused. He might have even been a little scared. But it has been eight years and Mr. Kraft has had enough. He wants his ring back and he wants it back now. So he took to Twitter to negotiate.

It didn't go well. Because vodka.

#ATMO | You Kinda Need to Know About This

Maybe I shouldn't have made any assumptions, but I guess I sorta assumed that we all knew what the Twitter hashtag #ATMO meant. On Saturday morning, I posted some t-shirt ideas and one of those t-shirt ideas was just the hashtag #ATMO. Lots of hopeful incoming players, current players and former players are tweeting out this hashtag. I think it also is some sort of atmospheric group of something, but we don't care about them.

The hashtag is an acronym for, Air The Motherfucker Out. I don't like to type out really harsh cursing on the front page because I want to be slightly legitimate, but I made an exception here. I won't be re-typing this acronym out any further and am asking that we make the hashtag our little inside joke and this post as a reference point. For me, it will just be the hashtag going forward.

So what exactly does it mean? Simply, it means what you think it means, but it also means a change in philosophy. Things will look the same, but I think the results, no matter if this team runs more or passes significantly more, will be different. The only statistic that I will provide in this exercise is just the most simple, but maybe the most telling statistic for a spread offense: yards per attempt.

TTU 2012

TAMU 2012

TTU 2011

UH 2011

TTU 2010

UH 2010

Yards/Att

7.8

8.4

6.9

9.2

6.7

8.1

Pretty simple, right?

I don't think that #ATMO is necessarily a number of passes, but the actual idea of getting the ball down the field.

#ATMO

Coming soon to the Viva The Matadors t-shirt store.

I'll probably write about this more during the summer, but in 2010 this was head coach Kliff Kingsbury's first job as offensive coordinator. Actually I think he was co-offensive coordinator, but that's fine. This was supposed to be Case Keenum's start to two big years, but Keenum tore his ACL during the third game of the year and Houston ended up relying on then, true freshman, David Piland, from Southlake Carroll. Piland struggled, to put it nicely. He wasn't awful, but he was a true freshman and it's not easy for true freshmen to come in and play right away.

It was a tough situation and Houston tried out a number of signal callers, but Piland was the best option. Houston went 5-7 that year and Piland only completed 58% of his passes. Piland's yards per passing attempt, ended up being 7.7, but if you add in all of the other quarterbacks that played, including Keenum, you get the number in the table above.

It was, probably by far, Kingsbury's toughest year as a coach, but I would guess that he preached to Piland #ATMO.

Because that's what Kingsbury is about. Houston's worst year in terms of getting the ball down the field and having a true freshman at quarterback was rivaled to what Neal Brown did at Texas Tech (with probably some behind the scenes coaching from Tuberville), and it was still lagging as to what Kingsbury did with his toughest situation.

You want to take the average of the three Texas Tech seasons and the single TAMU plus the two Houston season? Texas Tech for the past three year period: 7.1. The other two teams: 8.5. That's almost full yard and a half difference between the past three years and in terms of yards per attempt, that's a significant thing.

#ATMO

Monday Morning Mailbag

We introduced the mail bag segment last week and most folks assumed this was only a naked attempt by me to promote RC Buford, and all the assets he has behind him and also boobs. I could actually hear eyes rolling.

But despite all that, we got a great mix of questions. So let's get started.

Question from Steve: Any word on whether or not the Texas Tech Staff will get back to having a coaching clinic for area HS coaches? I think it was a great link to coaches and some of the talent around here during the Leach days. Tuberville's version of this was, like the team during his tenure, much more subdued and less entertaining. Looking forward to Kliff bringing it back to prominence as well. Thanks!

VTM Mailbag: Thanks for the question Steve. Unfortunately, we were unable to get you a definitive answer. Seth emailed Kenny Bell (in charge of football operations) but we didn't get a response. I sent a few questions in as well, but didn't get anything back in time. We do know there was a coaches clinic in San Angelo over the weekend and we'll keep watching for further updates. If there are any readers that can help us out, please let us know.

Question from @StevenEphAustin: How much longer do you expect us to play Baylor in Dallas? Who would you rather see us play in a neutral site game?

VTM Mailbag: My bet would be that the Tech/Baylor series will return to normal when Baylor's new stadium is complete. With all the renovations going on at the Jones, and with Baylor's new stadium, I would assume both schools would want to return to a traditional home and home rotation. As for question number 2, I tried to think outside the box. What if Leach builds Washington St. into a decent top 25 program and Kliff takes us there as well? It might be a fun series to play in the MetroPlex (or cough cough San Antonio cough cough) with some juicy story lines and guaranteed national exposure.

Question from Concerned Outsider:I've only been to Lubbock 3 times and I'm still curious how someone from the outside would ever decide to spend the prime of their youth attending college there? Did I miss something? Is their some part of the city I missed? Do cow urine and dust storms mix in the air to create some sort of brain paralysis?

VTM Mailbag: Cow urine and dust storms only cause brain paralysis for guys in Affliction t-shirts and spiked hair highlights. The rest of us make it work.

Question from FriscoRaider: Exactly how many episodes of Gunsmoke did Burt Reynolds appear in as Quint?

VTM Mailbag: 50.

Question from Red and Black 71: Have you ever seen Art Briles’ full sleeve tats?

VTM Mailbag: We've never seen him in short sleeves, but we did see him without his hat once. Just once.

Question from TTUSOL14: If you could go back in history and give twitter to any athlete (during their career) who would it be?

VTM Mailbag: I hope this question spurs some conversation. I thought about it for a while and here's what we've got:

1. Ted Williams: Would love to hear him talk shit about DiMaggio and dream of having his head frozen by his kids.

2. Pat Summerall: Eloquent, bourbon soaked tweets.

3. Shawn Kemp: He'd send cool Instagram pics of all his food. ALL THE FOOD.

4. Hollywood Henderson: Cocaine and Cowboys.

5. Jim McMahon: Batshit crazy.

And, the final question of the week from oldschoolraider: How do you get blood off concrete?

VTM Mailbag: A lot easier than off a turnip, I'll tell you that.

If you have time, you can follow all these steps. You can also use a can of coke I think, or maybe that's how you fix your car battery. If you're in a pinch though, and need a "fixer" it might be best to call this guy and not ask any questions:

Thanks to all of you that submitted a question, and we apologize for not getting to all of them. Keep sending them in and we'll do what we can. Email your questions to SARRMailbag@yahoo.com or submit via twitter to @FakeWillyT. Again, most of my followers are lawn care companies so I'm generally pretty quick to respond.
