Coming in hot at no. 14 is Desmon Smith. Smith makes for a great back up defensive back under some solid players. Although, now that Octavious Morgan could possibly be out for the season, could there be more playing time for Smith? We’ll see, but he's still sitting at number 14.
Smith is fortunately a bigger and experienced backup, which I’m always happy to have a deep roster. Injuries do happen and if you don't have hope in a back up... well good luck Charlie am I right? Last season he was fairly hot and cold on his game play. With 30 total tackles in the nine games he played, there is still a lot of room to grow. I think he has a solid chance of improvement, if he can keep his head on straight and not get arrested.. again. What helps him out is he is one of the better open-field tacklers. With master David Gibbs behind the strings, I think our defense is only going to get better.
17 offers and Des found himself a Red Raider. He only started six of the nine games he played last season of the 9 total so, as stated before, his experience is invaluable. On Monday, he practiced with the first team. Staying consistent isn’t his strong suit unfortunately. Hopefully, with Morgan out and Jah’shawn Johnson’s shoulder, Smith can pull through and surprise us. Previously I have commented with how obsessed I am with our defensive turnaround, and it still holds true. Don't let us down Des, I’m rooting for you. Also, I must add, David Gibbs, I have the biggest football crush on you. Keep doing you. And like, can no one get arrested this year? Just wondering.
