The Lady Raiders (6-13,0-8) go up against their biggest foe the Baylor Bears (16-3, 6-1) tonight at the Ferrell Center in Waco, TX at 7:07pm. The history of these teams has created some very exciting and emotional moments and games. This will be the 78th meeting and Tech leads the series 47-30.
The Lady Raiders finally showed a complete game last Saturday night against the Iowa State Cyclones in Lubbock. The game went into Overtime and Tech came up short and lost but there were no droughts in shooting and the defense was strong and the team played as a cohesive unit. They need to continue to come out focused and aggressive and not have "cold shooting" periods. And they need to play off of each other and make smart choices on their attempts on the basket.
If there ever was a game that will push this team to its ultimate play and one in which they need to be perfect, this is the one. The odds are against beating Baylor tonight but they need to play with all of the knowledge and skill they know and what Coach Whitaker has given them and they just might pull out the upset. I know it is a pipe dream to think but I always have hope that the Lady Raiders will win their game.
The Griner Era is over but Baylor has Senior Guard Odyssey Sims, who averages 29.7 ppg and 4.6 rpg and is 41.5% in treys and is over 80% accurate from the FT. Freshman Forward Nina Davis averages 13.5 ppg and 8.2 rpg. Another one to watch is Senior Guard Mackenzie Robertson with an average of 7.7 ppg and 3.6 rpg. Freshman Forward Niya Johnson only averages 4.5 ppg and 3.8 rpg but has over 121 Assists this season (avg 3.6 apg). The Baylor Bears are not invisible they have lost to Kansas and they are coming off a close call against Oklahoma State on Sunday. The Bears won in overtime 69-66.
The Baylor Bears' Head Coach, Kim Mulkey is in her 14th season with Baylor. Her career record is 388-84. She was the 2012 National Coach of the Year. In just 12 seasons as Baylor's head coach, she attained 300 career victories and ranks No. 4 among the nation's winningest active Division I head coaches (.811) and No. 5 all-time by percentage. Mulkey is a former Olympic Gold medalist and has twice guided the Lady Bear basketball program to the NCAA National Championship (2005 and 2012).
