Big 12 Hoops | Power Rankings (Week #10)

Ed Zurga

The power rankings for the Big 12 Conference men’s basketball teams each and every week. Iowa State beats Baylor, but falls to Oklahoma. Kansas is the only undefeated team in the Big 12.

TEAM COMMENT
#1 Kansas (11-4) The Jayhawks are in first place for good reason. Last week they beat OU 90-83 in Norman. Andrew Wiggins didn’t have a stellar performance, but KU didn’t need their star freshman to win. KU also clobbered a good top 25 ranked Kansas State team 86-60. Wiggins showed up for that one and had 22 points (3-4 from downtown). This week will definitely prove if KU is king of the Big 12. They have games with Iowa State tonight in Ames, and Oklahoma State at home on Saturday.
#2 Iowa State (14-1) The Cyclones smashed Baylor at home 87-72 and had a clear path to be the undefeated #1 team in the Big 12. DeAndre Kane dropped 30 points to go with 8 rebounds, 9 assists, and 5 steals. Oklahoma then stunned ISU 87-82 to give them their first loss of the season. It was despite Kane having another strong performance of 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. Nobody is going to have a perfect record in the Big 12 this year. ISU can bounce back on top with a win tonight against KU on their home floor. They have to also do well away from the Hilton Coliseum in Austin against UT on Saturday.
#3 Oklahoma State (14-2) The Cowboys had an easy win over UT at home 87-74. Marcus Smart had a double-double with 24 points (16-20 from the FTs) 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals. OSU then survived a scare in Morgantown to West Virginia winning by a single point 73-72. Smart had another double-double in that one with 22 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal. OSU has TCU on Wednesday at home, and travels to Lawrence for a showdown with KU on Saturday.
#4 Baylor (13-2) The Bears getting a beatdown in Ames last week to ISU 87-72 hurt them in the rankings. Isaiah Austin had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds that wasn’t enough. Against TCU was a different story when Cory Jefferson and Rico Gathers both had double-doubles along with 23 points from Taurean Prince. Baylor won the game in Waco 88-62. Baylor plays Tech in Lubbock on Wednesday, and then gets to battle OU in Waco on Saturday.
#5 Oklahoma (13-3) The Sooners stayed close with KU last week but couldn’t hang in the end losing 90-83. Cameron Clark had 32 points (12-16 FTs) and there were 3 others with 10+ points. The big story of the weekend was OU knocking off undefeated ISU 87-82 in Norman. Everyone helped to get the win. Ryan Spangler came up with 15 points and 16 rebounds; and Buddy Hield hit 6 three-point shots in the effort. The win over ISU shows how strong this league is this season; nobody is safe on any day in the Big 12. OU has a tough schedule as they travel to both K-State and Baylor this week.
#6 Kansas State (12-4) The Wildcats whipped TCU 65-47 with star freshman Marcus Foster draining 4 outside shots for 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. KSU was then disgraced by in-state rival KU 86-60. KU contained all of K-State’s players including Foster who only had 7 points on 3-12 from the field. This week will be interesting when OU goes to Manhattan on Tuesday. WVU is next to travel to K-State on Saturday.
#7 West Virginia (10-6) The Mountaineers had two close games, one went their way and the other didn’t. Juwan Staten made 25 points on 10-12 from the field to beat Texas Tech 89-86 in overtime. It was a close loss to OSU that would have been different had Staten made his final shot, but instead he finished with 20 points and WVU lost 73-72. Tonight with Texas in Morgantown it will be a battle for WVU, and we will see if they can hang on the road against K-State on Saturday.
#8 Texas (12-4) The Longhorns were beaten convincingly by OSU in Stillwater 87-74. Demarcus Holland had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The game in Austin against Texas Tech came down to the final seconds for UT to slip by for the win 67-64. Isaiah Taylor had 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. The games this week for UT are on the road against WVU tonight, and getting to host ISU on Saturday.
#9 Texas Tech (8-8) The Red Raiders had two chances to steal wins and be 2-1 in the Big 12. Dusty Hannahs missed an open outside shot in regulation that could’ve avoided overtime with WVU. Instead it was a heartbreaking 89-86 loss in OT. In Austin against UT Jaye Crockett missed a contested mid-range jumper for the lead that would have forced Texas to respond without hardly any time on the clock. Last week was the type of college basketball games you like to watch the finishes because of the fun and excitement. Tech just ended up being on the wrong side of the fun and excitement when time expired. Another nationally ranked team comes to Lubbock on Wednesday when Baylor gets to the United Spirit Arena; it is going to be rough for Tech to try for a victory. But, Tech has a chance to prove they are not at all the last place team in the conference on Saturday when they travel to play TCU.
#10 TCU (9-6) The Horned Frogs had two really tough opponents last week. Neither game went in the favor of TCU losing to K-State 65-47 and Baylor 88-62. Kyan Anderson had 12 points in each game. It doesn’t get any easier this week going to Stillwater for a game against OSU on Wednesday. But, the showdown at home against Tech on Saturday could be for bragging rights on who gets their first win in the Big 12.
