Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | Soccer Set to Debut; Volleyball Red-Black Scrimmage on Saturday

USA TODAY Sports

VTM's weekly news, notes and links on soccer, volleyball, track and field, men's tennis and men's basketball.

These are your Texas Tech non-football links of the week. Of note to all of these sports, you can now purchase your Texas Tech Olympic Sports Passes from the athletic department.

SOCCER | The soccer team defeated #25 Denver in an exhibition game last Friday, 1-0, which is great, because the team actually opens up their season this Friday at New Mexico. Go Wreck 'Em ladies!

If you need to learn about the soccer team, the official site has released a handy-dandy media guide. You should also note that sophomore Janine Beckie was named a MAC Hermann Trophy Candidate, which is the highest individual award in the sport. That's impressive and is only one of 31 candidates. Congrats!

VOLLEYBALL | The volleyball team will play their annual Red-Black game on Saturday at 3:00 pm at the United Spirit Arena.

TRACK AND FIELD | Congrats to Ifeatu Okafor for being name one of the top thirty 2013 NCAA Top Woman of the Year! Awesome!

MEN'S TENNIS | Welcome back to former Red Raider James Wilson, who spent last year at UNLV, who has been named as the men's tennis assistant head coach. Wilson graduated from Texas Tech in 2009.

MEN'S BASKETBALL | C Kader Tapsoba is playing for his home country, Burkina Faso, in the FIFA Africa Championships, and lost to Rwanda 80-61. Tapsoba started, scored 8 pounds, grabbed 2 boards and had 2 blocks.
