Odds and Ends
I think this is the last weekend that I'll be out of town, but I'll be out of town this weekend. Be good.
#longreads. SB Nation with an article about playing basketball in Slovakia. Pretty amazing to see how other parts of the world work.
Golf
The men began their NCAA Regional yesterday in Ohio and are currently 10th. Make a move.
Tennis
The women's tennis team has signed Brazil's Samantha Czarniak Rego to a letter of intent. Welcome to Texas Tech!
Soccer
Congrats to sophomore Jaelene Hinkle and junior Hayley Haagsma who are training with the U.S. U-23 National Team Camp at the Olympic Training Center in California and freshman Janine Beckie will play in the U.S. U-20 squad on a European Tour. Wow!
Softball
Congrats to Sandy James and Mikey Kenney for being named to an all-region team!
Track and Field
I still really don't understand track and how everything works, but there are 23 athletes that have qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary. Maybe this is like a regional tournament before the NCAA Championships?
Women's Basketball
The LAJ is all over this as Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt interviewed with prospective candidates in Dallas yesterday. I think we're going to be pretty happy with what Hocutt does here.
Baseball
As RndRckTTU has already posted last night (thanks!), the baseball team knocked around Baylor, 17-5 last night behind a strong pitching performance by Trey Masek and a huge offensive night of 3B Jake Barrios Congrats and DH Jarrard Poteete. This win, along with a Texas loss last night at TCU, means that Texas Tech is the 8th and final team in the Big 12 Tournament. The LAJ recaps the win. I think this team wanted to get into the Big 12 Tournament really bad.
Congrats to Trey Masek, Tim Proudfoot, Jerad McCrummen and Bryant Burleson who were named to the Academic All-Big 12! Speaking of Masek, SB Nation blog Crawfish Boxes prepared a really neat MLB draft profile on him. Check it out.
Football
Texas Tech got two pieces of good news yesterday. The first is that Navarro JC DE/LB Andre Ross made it official and committed to Texas Tech (DMN). Ross is a 2013 commitment and that means that he'll be on campus in the summer and he'll have three years to play. I'll try to get a profile up later today.
The second bit of good news, per Scout's Annabel Stephan, is that Texas Tech now has four quarterbacks on the roster as Lake Travis QB Baker Mayfield will walk on at Texas Tech. Mayfield was sorta left standing at the alter during the February signing period even though he thought he had offers, but now he'll be joining Texas Tech. SB Nation spoke with Mayfield during the summer 7-on-7 period. I think I'm going to do a full write-up on all of the preferred walk-ons. That could be interesting.
The LAJ has a Q&A with head coach Kliff Kingsbury that was done by the Amarillo-Globe when he was in Amarillo earlier this week. A lot of good information there, including the idea that Kingsbury and I both start working at 4:30 am. We're practically twins.
Crimson and Cream Machine continues their post spring assessment with a look at Texas Tech.
